Three Bucket-List Adventures. Three Very Different Experiences.
With one taking you into the heart of the Himalayas, another to the roof of Africa, and the other into the Andes and its ancient Inca history, it can be difficult to decide between the three.
The answer isn't simply to choose the most challenging trek or the prettiest country. It's choosing the trip that gives you the feeling of: "I have to do that!"
The answer comes down to one thing - the person booking.
What kind of trekker are you? What kind of adventure are you looking for?
Remember, there isn't a winner here. There are just three very different trips.
Everest Base Camp vs Kilimanjaro vs Machu Picchu: At a Glance
Everest Base Camp: Walk In The Footsteps Of Mountain Legends
When you think bucket list destination, Everest Base Camp is at the top of the list for many. For generations, Everest has been the ultimate symbol of adventure, exploration and pushing yourself to the limit. From legendary expeditions to the countless trekkers who set their sights on Base Camp today, Everest has become one of the most famous and instantly recognisable places on the planet. And honestly, it’s not hard to see why.
The Everest Base Camp trek takes you into Nepal’s Khumbu region, winding through colourful Sherpa villages, dramatic Himalayan valleys and some seriously jaw-dropping scenery. Day by day, you’ll climb higher, heading deeper into the mountains until you finally reach Everest Base Camp, standing beneath the world’s highest mountain.
And that’s what makes Everest Base Camp different.
The destination is extraordinary, but so is the journey that gets you there.
What Makes Everest Base Camp Special?
You’ll follow in the footsteps of legendary mountaineers, trek deep into the Everest region, pass through traditional Sherpa villages and experience the Buddhist culture that has shaped life here for generations. And then there’s that moment you’ve been working towards: standing at Everest Base Camp, in the shadow of the world’s highest mountain.
EBC often becomes more than a trek and turns into a complete change of perspective for our trekkers. It's a chance to challenge yourself, take in a completely different way of life and come home with an entirely new outlook on life. It's the type of adventure that sticks with you long after you're home.
It was as I’d hoped, one of the best experiences of my life
What Is The Everest Base Camp Trek Actually Like?
The Everest Base Camp trek is a proper Himalayan adventure. You’ll spend days trekking through the Khumbu region, gradually gaining altitude as the landscape becomes more dramatic with every step.
Your journey typically begins in the mountain town of Lukla before heading towards Namche Bazaar, the colourful gateway to the Everest region. From there, the trail winds through traditional Sherpa villages, across suspension bridges and alongside roaring rivers, with huge Himalayan peaks appearing around you.
As you climb higher, the scenery changes. Forests give way to rocky valleys, glaciers and high-altitude landscapes, with iconic peaks such as Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest dominating the horizon.
You’ll also have acclimatisation days along the way, giving your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude while allowing you to explore some of the incredible places in the region.
Eventually, after days of trekking, you’ll reach Everest Base Camp at around 5,364m.
It’s not just about the moment you arrive, though. It’s everything that happens along the way - the people you meet, the Sherpa culture, the mountain scenery and the feeling of getting closer to Everest with every day.
And when you finally reach Base Camp, you’ll know exactly why you made the journey.
Which Everest Base Camp Route Should I Choose?
EverTrek offers 4 ways to reach Everest Base Camp - The classic EBC trek, EBC via the Gokyo Valley, EBC Three Passes and Ultimate Island Peak with EBC. The real question is: how do you fancy getting there?

There’s no best Everest adventure. There’s just the one that makes you think: “Yep. That’s the one.”
Kilimanjaro: Discover What You’re Capable Of
When you arrive in Africa, you'll be standing at the base of Kilimanjaro. Above you is almost 6000m of volcanic terrain and you're staring at your goal - Uhuru Peak! When you decide to take on Kilimanjaro, the objective is clear from the start - reach the summit!
What Is The Kilimanjaro Trek Actually Like?
When trekking our Lemosho Route, the adventure starts in Moshi, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, before you head into the rainforest and begin your trek up the mountain.
From Big Tree Camp, things start to change. The dense rainforest gradually opens up, giving way to the wide, open landscapes of the Shira Plateau.
From here, you’ll cross the plateau before the scenery gets higher, wilder and more dramatic.
You’ll trek past Lava Tower at around 4,600m, descend into the Barranco Valley, take on the famous Barranco Wall and continue towards Karanga.
Eventually, you’ll reach Barafu Camp at around 4,550m.
This is where you’ll spend your final night before the big one.
Summit night.
Why Is Kilimanjaro Such A Powerful Challenge?
Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895m, making it the highest mountain in Africa and one of the world’s legendary Seven Summits.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a technical climber to stand on top of it.
EverTrek’s Kilimanjaro trekking routes don’t require ropes, crampons or any previous mountaineering experience. It’s a trek rather than a technical climb.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though.
The altitude is no joke, the trekking days can be long, and summit night will probably be one of the toughest things you’ve ever done.
But that’s exactly what makes reaching Uhuru Peak feel so incredible.
There’ll be moments when you’re tired. Moments when your legs are telling you to stop. And probably a few moments when 5,895m feels like a very long way away.
But you keep going, one step at a time.
Then, eventually, the sky starts to brighten. The sun comes up over Africa and the summit appears.
For many trekkers, that moment becomes about much more than standing on top of Africa. It’s about realising just how much you’re capable of when you keep putting one foot in front of the other.
And once you’ve done that, you might just find yourself thinking:
“If I can do this, what else can I do?”
Reaching the summit is incredible, but the six preceding days were also fantastic and some of the best hiking experiences I have ever had
What Is Kilimanjaro Summit Night Like?
There is one big difference between Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp and Machu Picchu.
With Everest Base Camp and Machu Picchu, the journey is about reaching an iconic destination along the trail. With Kilimanjaro, the summit itself is the goal.
That makes Kilimanjaro a great choice if you like having a clear challenge to work towards and want that feeling of standing at the highest point.
On summit day, you’ll typically wake around midnight.
You’ll have a light meal, pull on your layers, switch on your head torch and begin climbing in the darkness.
The pace is deliberately slow and the mountain is quiet.
On the Lemosho Route, you’ll climb towards Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.
On EverTrek's unique 7 day Marangu Route, you’ll reach Gillman’s Point at around 5,685m, continue to Stella Point at around 5,756m, and then make the final push to Uhuru Peak.
The summit day on Marangu is particularly long, at approximately 22km and 14–16 hours of trekking - but when the darkness begins to lift as the sun rises, you realise you're standing on the roof of Africa!
That’s the moment many Kilimanjaro trekkers dream about.
Which Kilimanjaro Route Should I Choose?
Choose the Lemosho route if: you want the classic Kilimanjaro experience, varied scenery and a longer route designed to give you more time to acclimatise.
Choose the Marangu route if: you want a shorter, more straightforward route with mountain hut accommodation rather than camping.
For more information on which route is best for you, check out our Marangu vs Lemosho route comparison.
Machu Picchu: For Those Who Want To Feel Like True Explorers
Machu Picchu is known for being one of the world's most famous archaeological sites - but getting there is an adventure in itself! You'll spend days weaving your way through the Andes, crossing high mountain passes, walking ancient paths, discovering Inca ruins, meeting the locals and eventually, arriving at one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
That’s the appeal of trekking to Machu Picchu with EverTrek.
You’re not simply going to Peru to see Machu Picchu. You’re going exploring in Peru.
Why Is Machu Picchu More Than A Trek?
Peru offers something completely different from Nepal or Tanzania.
The adventure isn’t about reaching one huge mountain or standing on a summit. Instead, it’s about the journey, the history and everything you discover along the way.
In Cusco, you’ll explore a city shaped by both Inca and colonial history.
Out in the Andes, you’ll trek past ancient archaeological sites, through traditional communities and across some seriously varied landscapes.
One day you might be surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks, and the next you’re walking through greener valleys.
There’s always something new to discover, which is what makes Machu Picchu such a special bucket-list adventure.
Now, of course, the destination is iconic, but the journey gives it meaning.
By the time you finally arrive at Machu Picchu, you haven’t just travelled to one of the world’s most famous landmarks. You’ve spent days experiencing the landscapes, history and culture that make Peru what it is.
If you’re fascinated by ancient history, love discovering new cultures and want an adventure where the journey is just as important as the destination, Machu Picchu could be the perfect choice for you.
What Is The Machu Picchu Trek Actually Like?
If you’re wondering what it’s actually like to trek to Machu Picchu, expect a proper adventure through the Peruvian Andes - with plenty of variety along the way.
Trekking days can involve long climbs, steep descents and high-altitude terrain, so you’ll need a reasonable level of fitness. But unlike Kilimanjaro, where the ultimate goal is reaching a 5,895m summit, Machu Picchu trekking is about progressing through the landscape and taking on a series of smaller challenges each day.
You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to slow down and take in your surroundings. From mountain trails and valleys to ancient ruins and local villages, there’s a lot to see between the start of the trek and Machu Picchu itself.
For anyone considering a Machu Picchu trek in Peru, it’s worth remembering that the experience isn’t just about how far you walk. The altitude, terrain and number of trekking days all play a part, so choosing the right route for your fitness level and the type of adventure you want is important.
The good news? With the right training and preparation, many people are able to complete the Machu Picchu trek. You just need to be ready to walk, explore and embrace your days of adventure in the Andes.
I have fallen in love with Peru, its people and its scenery
Which Machu Picchu Route Should I Choose?
Choose the Tomacaya Route if: you want a quieter, more adventurous trek through the Andes, with incredible scenery and a real sense of exploration before reaching Machu Picchu.
Choose the Inca Trail if: seeing the iconic ruins is your priority and you’d prefer a shorter trekking route with fewer days on the trail.
