What's the accommodation like on an Everest Base Camp trek
What's the accommodation like on an Everest Base Camp trek?
There are varying levels of accommodation on the trek to Everest Base Camp. We do use some of the best that's available, but as it's a remote region it's still very very basic. The standards you get over here in the UK compared to the standards you get whilst you're on a trek to Everest Base Camp are very different and it's certainly something you should prepare for.
That's not to say you'll be living in squalor or without certain luxuries as the lodges and tea houses certainly offer something special, it's just not the same as western standards. On all of the treks, we stay at lodges and tea houses that all have twin rooms. Some have bathrooms attached and showers but the higher we go, the more basic the accommodation gets.
The walls in the lodges/tea houses are very thin so we do recommend you take some earplugs, especially if there are any snorers in the group.
Nearly all of the places we stay have electricity and internet via WIFI and some places also have hot showers which is great after a day hiking in the mountains.
The only place you won't have this is Gorak Shep which is 2 hours walk from Everest Base Camp. There's no natural water source here so we do recommend you stick to bottled water at this stage. We normally want to be as green as possible and not buy bottled water to save on the plastic which is why we provide chlorine tablets or droplets on the trek but we highly recommend that you stick to bottled water in Gorak Shep. You want to lower the chances of getting ill at high altitude.
So to conclude, in terms of accommodation, it is very basic and it's due to being in a remote region of the Himalayas. However, it's massively enjoyable and a great challenge. At the end of the day, the places we stay are somewhere for youto just to get your head down and get some rest. The accommodation may be basic but the food and the tea in the Everest region is absolutely amazing!
