Planning to climb Mount Toubkal? Before you start training for the 4,167m summit, there are a few important bits of preparation to tick off your list - including checking your travel vaccinations.
Whether you’re joining our Toubkal Weekender or taking on our longer 8 day Toubkal adventure, it’s worth checking the latest travel-health advice before heading to Morocco.
For most UK travellers, the vaccination requirements are relatively straightforward. However, what you need can depend on your previous vaccinations, health, itinerary and individual circumstances.
Remember - always speak to your GP, pharmacist or qualified travel-health professional for personalised advice before travelling.
Do I Need Vaccinations For Toubkal?
There are no routine vaccination requirements for most travellers arriving in Morocco from the UK, but several vaccinations are recommended.
TravelHealthPro recommends that travellers are up to date with their routine UK vaccinations and lists Hepatitis A, tetanus and typhoid among the vaccines recommended for most travellers to Morocco.
Your healthcare professional can check your vaccination history and let you know whether you need any boosters.
Which Vaccinations Are Recommended For Morocco?
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for previously unvaccinated travellers to Morocco.
Hepatitis A can be spread through contaminated food and water, so good food and water hygiene is important throughout your trip.
This applies whether you’re exploring Marrakech, staying in Imlil or trekking through the Atlas Mountains.
Tetanus
Make sure you’re up to date with your routine tetanus vaccinations before travelling.
TravelHealthPro advises that a tetanus-containing booster may be recommended if your last dose was more than 10 years ago when travelling somewhere where access to medical facilities may be limited.
It’s worth checking your protection before heading into the Atlas Mountains.
Typhoid
Typhoid vaccination is recommended for most travellers to Morocco, alongside sensible food and water precautions.
And unfortunately, having the vaccine doesn’t mean your stomach has been given free rein to eat absolutely anything.
Wash your hands regularly, take care with food hygiene and stick to safe drinking water throughout your trip.
Are There Other Vaccinations I Might Need?
Possibly.
Depending on your individual circumstances, additional vaccinations such as Hepatitis B or rabies may be considered. It's recommended that some travellers consider Hepatitis B vaccination based on factors such as their activities, length of stay and individual health risks.
Rabies is also present in Morocco, so travellers who may have increased contact with animals or limited access to medical care may need to discuss rabies vaccination with a healthcare professional.
Your GP, pharmacist or travel clinic can assess your trip and vaccination history and advise you on what is appropriate.
When Should I Get My Toubkal Vaccinations?
Don’t leave it until the week before you fly.
It's recommended to check vaccination requirements and health precautions at least 8 weeks before travelling, while a travel-health appointment around four to six weeks before departure is also commonly advised.
Some vaccinations require multiple doses, and your previous vaccination history will affect what you need.
Even if you’re travelling sooner, it’s still worth getting professional advice.
