8-Day Albania Adventure: Hike, Raft, Bike & Explore Itinerary
Welcome to Albania and the start of your adventure.
After arriving in Tirana, you’ll have time to settle in before getting your first feel for Albania’s colourful and energetic capital city. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the chance to explore nearby streets, cafés and local landmarks before easing into the evening.
Take the rest of the day to relax at your hotel and enjoy your first taste of Albanian cuisine at one of the local restaurants close to your accommodation.
Today we travel to the historic mountain town of Krujë, one of Albania’s most important cultural destinations.
You’ll explore Krujë Castle, wander through the centuries-old Ottoman bazaar and learn more about Albania’s national hero before heading into the hills above the town. From here, a scenic hike leads to the sacred cave and viewpoint of Sari Salltik, where wide views stretch across the surrounding landscape.
This evening, enjoy a traditional welcome dinner accompanied by live folk entertainment - a brilliant introduction to Albania’s hospitality, music and local culture.
Activity: Cultural sightseeing & moderate hiking
Hike Distance: Approx. 4-5km
Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Today we travel south towards one of Albania’s most beautiful and atmospheric cities.
Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows”, Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its white Ottoman houses rising up the hillside above the river valley. You’ll explore ancient castle walls, cobbled streets and historic neighbourhoods while discovering why Berat is considered one of Albania’s cultural highlights.
Later, enjoy free time to relax, explore the riverside cafés or sample local wines from one of the region’s vineyards (included as part of the tour).
Today brings one of the most active and memorable days of the trip.
After travelling to Përmet, we head to the Vjosa River for a guided rafting experience through beautiful river scenery. Known as one of Europe’s last free-flowing rivers, the Vjosa is a brilliant place to experience Albania’s wilder landscapes from the water.
After the rafting, the pace slows down with a visit to Benja Thermal Springs. Set among mountain scenery and close to historic stone bridges, these natural warm pools are the perfect place to unwind after an active day.
It’s a brilliant mix of adventure and relaxation - river first, hot springs after.
Activity: Rafting & thermal springs
Rafting Duration: Approx. 1.5–2 hrs
Difficulty: Moderate adventure activity
This morning we explore the quieter, more rural side of Southern Albania.
A guided hike through the countryside surrounding Leusë village takes you through scenic landscapes, traditional communities and historic churches, with views across the surrounding mountain scenery. It’s a slower-paced day on foot, giving you a closer look at the region beyond the main towns and roads.
In the afternoon, we head into the valley for a guided mountain biking experience. There are different route options depending on the group’s preferences, so you don’t need to be an expert rider. The focus is on enjoying the landscape, getting active and seeing another side of the Përmet area.
Hike Distance: Approx. 7.5km
Difficulty: Moderate
Hiking Time: Approx. 2.5–3 hrs
Mountain Biking Time: Approx. 2-3 hrs
Today the trip shifts from mountains and valleys to the Ionian Coast.
As we travel towards the Albanian Riviera, the scenery gradually changes from inland landscapes to coastal views, turquoise water and a more relaxed seaside atmosphere. Arriving in Sarandë, you’ll have free time to enjoy the waterfront, relax by the beach, explore the town or simply slow the pace after the more active days earlier in the trip.
Sarandë also offers optional local excursions such as boat trips, coastal visits and sunset viewpoints. These are not included or organised by EverTrek, so we recommend bringing some extra cash if you’d like to explore independently during your free time. As a rough guide, local boat trips can often cost around €20–€35 per person, but prices vary and should be confirmed locally.
Today combines ancient history with one of Albania’s best-known natural sights.
We start by exploring Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Balkans’ most important archaeological locations. The site brings together layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian history in a beautiful setting close to the coast.
Later, visit the famous Blue Eye spring, where clear turquoise water rises from deep underground, surrounded by forest scenery.
Spend your final afternoon relaxing by the coast before enjoying your last evening in Southern Albania.
After breakfast, we begin the journey back to Tirana Airport for your onward flight home.
After eight days of history, adventure, mountains, rivers and coastline, it’s time to say goodbye to one of Europe’s most exciting emerging destinations.
The drive is approximately 4.5 hours, so we recommend booking your return flight from 3pm onwards.

Tap Water Safety
In most places, the tap water in Albania is not drinkable, so it is better to buy bottled water in Albania, like the locals do as well.
We recommend carrying at least two litres of water a day to help combat the Summer heat, using refillable bottles or a hydration system, to ensure the plastic bottles can be disposed of properly.
Filter Water Wherever You Go
For extra peace of mind on your adventure, our branded Water-to-Go bottles filter up to 99.9999% of contaminants from non-saltwater sources while helping reduce single-use plastic.Use code evertrek20 to receive 20% discount at checkout.

Difficulty:
Moderate
How challenging is the trek?
The Albania Adventure is rated moderate on the EverTrek challenge scale.
This is an active multi-activity adventure rather than a full trekking expedition. You’ll be hiking, rafting, cycling, exploring towns and archaeological sites, travelling between regions and spending time on your feet across several days. However, there is no high altitude, no technical trekking and no need for previous rafting or mountain biking experience.
The main challenge comes from the variety of activities, the warmer conditions, and having several active days close together. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to get stuck in, but this trip is designed to be achievable for active travellers who enjoy being outdoors.
If you can comfortably walk for a few hours, manage uneven paths, enjoy light to moderate activity and are happy to try something new, this Albania adventure holiday should be very manageable.
You won’t be climbing mountains at altitude or trekking for 8-10 hours a day, but you will be combining different activities across the week. Expect scenic hikes, a guided rafting experience on the Vjosa River, mountain biking with route options depending on the group, cultural visits, cobbled streets, steps, warm weather and time exploring on foot.
For most people with a decent base level of fitness, this trip is very achievable. A bit of preparation beforehand will simply help you enjoy it more, especially on the hiking and biking days.
Pre-Trip Fitness Prep
To get the most from this trip, you should be comfortable with:
-
Walk comfortably for 3 to 5 hours at a steady pace
-
Manage uneven paths, cobbled streets, steps and gentle hill sections
-
Handle a few consecutive active days with sightseeing, walking and activities
-
Feel comfortable taking part in guided rafting and cycling sessions
-
Build general stamina through regular walking, gym work, cycling or weekend hikes
You do not need to be an experienced trekker, cyclist or rafter. No previous rafting experience is needed, and the mountain biking routes can be adapted depending on the group’s preferences.
If you’re not currently very active, this is still a trip you can train towards. A few months of regular walking, light cardio and some hill practice will make a big difference to how confident and comfortable you feel.
Is the Albania Adventure right for me?
Albania Adventure is a great choice if you want an active holiday without taking on a hardcore trek or high-altitude expedition.
This trip is ideal if you enjoy variety and like the sound of combining hiking, Vjosa River rafting, mountain biking, culture, local food, historic towns and coastal downtime in one week. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable spending time on your feet, but you don’t need to be an experienced trekker, cyclist or rafter.
No previous rafting experience is needed, and the mountain biking routes can be adapted depending on the group’s preferences.
This trip may not be the right fit if you’re looking for a very relaxed sightseeing holiday, a purely beach-based break, or if you would struggle with several active days, uneven ground, steps or light-to-moderate outdoor activity.
With the right mindset and a basic level of preparation, this is a fun, varied and very achievable Albania adventure holiday.
That’s enough. I wouldn’t do the full “could be a great choice if / may not be right if” bullet list unless the page format already expects it. For this trip, too much warning can make it sound harder than it is.
What to expect on the trip
Activity Level
This is a moderate multi-activity trip. You’ll be moving most days, but the activities are varied rather than extreme.
Some days focus more on culture and sightseeing, while others include rafting, hiking or cycling. The balance of activity and downtime is what makes this trip work so well. You’ll get plenty of adventure, but also time to enjoy local food, historic towns, thermal springs and the Albanian Riviera.
Hiking
The hiking on this trip is scenic and achievable rather than technical. You’ll walk to viewpoints, explore village trails and spend time on rural paths around places like Krujë and Përmet.
Expect some uneven ground, hill sections, cobbled streets and steps, but not long high-altitude trekking days or technical mountain terrain.
The longest hike is around 7-8km, with about 400m of elevation gain, taking 3-4 hours to complete at a casual pace, and stopping at viewpoints along the way.
Rafting
The Vjosa River rafting experience is guided and no previous rafting experience is needed.
You’ll be briefed before getting on the water, and the activity is designed to be a fun and memorable part of the trip rather than an extreme white-water challenge. You should be comfortable taking part in a water-based activity and following the instructions of your guides.
Rafting conditions can vary depending on the season and river levels, so the final experience may be adjusted locally for safety and suitability. During July and August, the river is often gentler, making this a more relaxed introduction to rafting.
Mountain Biking
The mountain biking is guided, with route options depending on the group’s preferences and ability.
You don’t need to be an expert rider, but you should be comfortable riding a bike and happy to cycle for a period of time on local roads, tracks or valley routes. The focus is on enjoying the scenery and exploring the Përmet area in a different way.
Terrain
Across the trip, you can expect a mix of town streets, cobbled lanes, rural paths, valley trails, river areas and coastal locations.
This is not technical terrain, but good footwear is still important. You’ll be walking on uneven surfaces at times, especially around older towns, village trails and natural sites such as Benja Springs and the Blue Eye.
Weather
Albania can be warm, especially during the active parts of the day, so you should be prepared for sunshine, changing conditions and time outdoors.
The time of year can make a difference to the feel of the trip. In July and August, temperatures can be higher, so the hikes, cycling and sightseeing may feel more tiring in the heat. River levels can also be lower during the summer months, which often makes the Vjosa rafting experience gentler and more relaxed.
Lightweight layers, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, comfortable walking shoes and activity-appropriate clothing will all help you enjoy the trip.
Pace
The pace is designed to be active, varied and enjoyable rather than intense from start to finish.
The first part of the trip is fuller, with city exploring, cultural visits, hiking, Vjosa River rafting, Benja Thermal Springs and mountain biking around Përmet. These days give the trip its adventure feel, so you should expect to be active and on the move.
The final part of the itinerary slows down as you reach the Albanian Riviera. Day 6 includes free time in Sarandë to enjoy the coast, while Day 7 combines visits to Butrint and the Blue Eye spring with a final afternoon by the sea.
This makes the trip a great balance of adventure and downtime - active enough to feel rewarding, but with time at the end to relax and enjoy Albania’s coastline.

The itinerary is varied and includes hiking, rafting, cycling, sightseeing and time on the Albanian Riviera, with guided support throughout the trip.

The rapid grading for the rafting experience varies throughout the year, based on the water levels. Depending when you travel, you can expect the following:
- During July, August, and September (and possibly late June as well), the maximum grading is normally Grade 2. Even if it rains during these months, the river is usually Grade 1-2, reaching a maximum of Grade 3 only during periods of heavy rainfall. At this time of year, it is a gentle and beginner-friendly experience rather than a high-adrenaline whitewater rafting activity. The focus is more on enjoying the river, swimming opportunities, and water-based activities during the trip.
- In May and August the maximum rapid grading that our rafting team operates with tourists is Grade 3.5–4. At these levels, participants are required to sign a declaration, as rafting is considered an extreme sport under such conditions.
You don’t need to be an experienced mountain biker, but you should be comfortable riding a bike. The guided mountain biking activity around Përmet has route options depending on the group’s preferences and ability, so the focus is on enjoying the scenery rather than taking on a technical biking challenge.
