How challenging is the trek?
The EverTrek Training Weekends in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia have become a bit of a rite of passage for EverTrekkers getting ready for big adventures. These weekends are all about getting your legs moving, testing your gear, building your mountain skills and getting your mind and body prepared for high altitude and trekking expeditions like Everest Base Camp, Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, or even 6,000m+ peaks.
They’re designed to be challenging but accessible, whatever stage you’re at in your trek prep. You’ll spend full days hiking in rugged UK mountain terrain, carrying your daypack, climbing summits, and learning essential skills that’ll help you smash your upcoming trips.
It’s about preparation, not perfection and with the guidance of the EverTrek team (and a few Yetis), you’ll come away fitter, smarter, and fully fired up for your main event.
Pre-Weekend Fitness Prep
To get the most out of the weekend, you should be able to:

Walk for 5 to 7 hours a day with a 6 to 8kg daypack

Tackle moderate to steep ascents and descents, often on rocky, uneven trails

Enjoy a full day on your feet, hiking at a steady pace with breaks
You don't need to be a mountain marathon runner - just have a base level of fitness and a willingness to get stuck in. If you’re prepping for a high altitude or trekking expedition, think of this weekend as your real-world fitness checkpoint.
What To Expect On The Trek
Mountain Challenges
Our training routes serve up challenging terrain, with steep climbs, rocky ridges, muddy trails (especially after Welsh rain), and long descents. The terrain isn’t technical, but it’s tough enough to give you a proper workout and mirror some of the physical effort needed for trekking at altitude.
Summits vary, but you’ll usually bag a few local peaks, learning pacing, hydration, and mountain safety techniques along the way.
Duration
The weekends run from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, and typically include:

A full day of trekking on Saturday (aprox 5–7 hours)

A shorter hike or activity session on Sunday morning (2–4 hours)

Breakout workshops focusing on gear, altitude training, packing tips, and trek-specific advice
Friday night is arrival, briefing, and meeting the team – nice and relaxed, with time to settle in and meet your fellow trekkers.
Terrain
You’ll be walking on:

Grassy trails, rocky paths, muddy sections, and occasional steep pitches

Summit routes with exposed sections and changing weather

Classic UK mountain conditions - unpredictable, beautiful, and challenging
You’ll carry your own daypack (around 30L) with essentials for the day (waterproofs, snacks, water, extra layers, etc.), much like you would on a full trek.

Expect anything and everything:

Conditions can change quickly, so layering and good waterproofs are essential

3-Day Snowdonia Training Weekend Itinerary
Arrival at the accommodation is usally between 5-6pm. Tonight is super relaxed, time for you to settle into the accommodation, grab a drink and get to know the rest of the group and of couse meet the Yetis!
We'll also have our weekend briefing and meet some of the mountain guides who will be with us for the weekend.
Today will be an early start, grabbing some breakfast before we set off for a full day in the mountains. We normally spend around 5-7 hours out hiking.
This day is all about enjoyment in the mountains. We usually include a summit of one or a few of the local peaks but we will also go through some useful tips and chat about your upcoming trips. We will talk about acclimatisation, hydration, pace and also what you will expect out in the Himalayas.
We will then spend the evening at a local pub for some well-earned beer and food.
Meals included - Breakfast.
Must bring your own packed lunch. Evening meal is arranged by EverTrek and paid for seperately.
Our last day, it comes round so quickly!! We usually spend the morning in break out groups, focusing on specific topics like how to pack for Everest Base Camp, technical kit, dealing with altitude and mountain safety.
Once all your questions have been answered we will head out for a slightly shorter walk, the day normally ends after lunchtime depending on the weather when you can then head home after an awesome weekend of hiking.

Food & Accommodation
Preparing for a high-altitude trek means looking after your body and that starts with proper fuel and a good night’s rest. On this training weekend in the spectacular Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), you’ll stay in comfortable shared accommodation and enjoy a sociable weekend of hiking, learning, and getting to know the EverTrek team and your fellow trekkers.
While some meals aren’t included in the trip cost, we’ve made it easy to stay well-fed and well-prepped, with plenty of local options and group meals arranged to keep things simple and fun.
Food
You’ll need the right nutrition to power through two days of mountain trekking and although meals are not fully included, you’ll be well supported throughout the weekend.
Breakfast
Breakfast is included on both Saturday and Sunday mornings and is usually a continental-style offering, providing enough fuel to start your day strong. Options typically include cereal, toast, fruit, hot drinks and juice, depending on the accommodation.
Lunch
Lunch is not included in your booking, so we ask all trekkers to bring their own packed lunch for both Saturday and Sunday. You can either bring lunch with you, or pick up supplies locally in advance.
Ideal lunch items include sandwiches, wraps, fruit, trail mix, energy bars and snacks, so all easy to carry and quick to eat while out on the trail.
Dinner
- Friday Night: This is a relaxed evening to settle in and meet the group. We don’t provide dinner, but the group will often grab food together, usually from local takeaways or pubs, which we help organise in advance.
- Saturday Night: After a full day in the mountains, we arrange a group dinner at a local pub, a great way to share stories from the trail and soak in the atmosphere of Snowdonia. The cost of the meal is not included but the reservation and group arrangements are handled by us.
Drinks & Water
Drinking water is available at the accommodation, and we recommend bringing reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder for the hikes. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities to stop for coffee or a warm drink before or after hikes in the local area.
Accommodation
Over the weekend, you’ll stay in shared accommodation in the Snowdonia region which are typically a bunkhouse, guesthouse or hostel, depending on group size and availability. Rooms are generally shared (twin, triple or small dorms) and offer a warm and welcoming base for your weekend in the mountains.
Facilities usually include:

- Hot showers and shared bathrooms
- Drying room or space for gear
- Communal lounge or dining space for briefings and socialising
We select accommodation that’s practical, cosy, and located with easy access to Snowdonia’s incredible trail network.
