Difficulty Gauge

Difficulty:

Challenging

How challenging is the trek?

The Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes trek is a stunning and slightly more challenging variation of the classic EBC route. It’s not a technical climb, but it does include more altitude, more variety in terrain, and the added adventure of crossing the famous Cho La Pass at 5,420m.

EBC via Gokyo is absolutely achievable for people with a good level of fitness and a bit of grit. That said, it’s important to know what you're getting into before you lace up your boots.

Here’s how to check if you’re ready:

Pre-Trek Fitness Prep

Before heading out, you should aim to:

  • Be able to hike for 5 to 8 hours with a backpack weighing around 6 to 8kg.

  • Include uphill and downhill sections with 500 to 800m of elevation gain in your training hikes.

  • Practice consecutive day trekking, try back-to-back hikes over a weekend to simulate the rhythm of the actual trek.

If you can do this without feeling completely wiped out, you're on the right track.

If Everest Base Camp is on your bucket list but you don’t quite feel ready fitness-wise, don’t worry. With a bit of training over a few months, even just local hikes and building up your endurance gradually, this adventure is completely achievable.

What to expect on the trek

Altitude Challenges

This route takes you above 5,000m more than once, with the highest points being Cho La Pass (5,420m) and Gokyo Ri (5,357m)  where you can catch one of the best panoramic views of Everest in the region. The higher you go, the less oxygen there is, which makes everything feel harder. Acclimatisation days are built into the itinerary to help your body adjust.

Duration

This 17-day adventure gives you plenty of time to acclimatise and soak in the stunning Gokyo Valley. You'll cross the dramatic Cho La Pass and trek through a mix of terrain, including the famously undulating “Nepali flat.” Most days involve 5 to 8 hours of trekking with plenty of ups and downs, with the occasional longer push as part of the adventure.

Terrain

This isn’t just a longer walk to Base Camp the terrain is more varied and occasionally tougher:

  • You’ll cross glacial moraines, rocky ridgelines, high mountain passes, and icy sections.

  • One of the highlights is the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal.

  • The Cho La Pass day involves a steep climb and a section across a glacier – not technical, but definitely challenging.

  • Plus, there are plenty of suspension bridges, narrow trails, and some rugged sections underfoot.

Weather

Expect cold, particularly at night in the higher altitudes like Gokyo and during the crossing of Cho La Pass. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, even in the peak seasons. You’ll need to be prepared with proper layers and quality gear to stay warm and comfortable.

What customers say about us

17-Day Everest Base Camp Via Gokyo Valley Itinerary

Welcome to Kathmandu – the capital city of Nepal.

Today is your first day with us at EverTrek. We will send one of our team to pick you up at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). After the long flight you can spend today exploring the streets of Thamel.

You will enjoy a group meal with your fellow trekkers. You'll be taken to one of the most popular local restaurants where you can enjoy Nepali food along with cultural music and ethnic dance.

(Highlights of the day: Cultural music and Ethnic dance.)

Today you will head out into Kathmandu and visit the cultural and historical sites of the Kathmandu Valley.

You will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu and enjoy lunch at one of our favourite viewpoints in the city. Kathmandu lies at 1300m above sea level so it’s important to get out and about today and let your body acclimatise.

Today also gives you the opportunity to grab any last-minute items in the trekking hub of Thamel and get an early night ready for the trek tomorrow.

*Something to note*

Due to ongoing development and important maintenance at Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport, your flight to Lukla may be rerouted to Ramechhap Airport. This is because the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) ruled that flights to and from Lukla during the 2019 post-monsoon season would operate through Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu. This action has been prolonged longer than expected and the CAAN is looking at permanently moving all flights that go to Lukla from Ramechhap. While some flights will certainly still go from Kathmandu, they are not always guaranteed, even when booked in advance and can be subject to unplanned and prolonged delays.

If flying to Lukla from Ramechhap Airport, the journey to Ramechhap will start on day two of your itinerary. After a part-day tour of Kathmandu, you will drive for approx. four to five hours to the town of Mulkot where EverTrek will provide accommodation and your evening meal. As with all Nepalese roads, the journey will be a bumpy one, but it’s necessary to ensure your dream of Base Camp becomes a reality! It will be an early start on day three, as you wake up at 3:30/4:30 am and take a short 30-minute drive to the airport. The flight to Lukla is shorter from Ramechhap than from Kathmandu which means we can monitor the weather windows with greater accuracy. EverTrek will get you on one of the first flights to Lukla where you can have a hearty breakfast and celebrate the start of your trek!

On the return journey, you will fly from Lukla to Ramechhap and then take the long bumpy adventurous drive back to Kathmandu. The traffic going into Kathmandu can be severe, so this may take approximately six to seven hours (with breaks for food and a stretch).

Although this has been an enforced change for everyone from CAAN, our ultimate aim is to get you on the trek safely and to make it to Everest Case Camp so we have made plans to make sure there will be as minimal disruption as possible. We will provide all the additional staff and accommodation for the diversion, absolutely no cost will be passed onto you, our awesome EverTrekkers, but we do ask for your patience with the potential change with the itinerary.

We will be visiting the Sherpa museum and the famous Tenzing Norgay statue which is set in front of truly epic views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. We will then take a steep climb up to the Everest View hotel at an altitude of 3880 meters above sea level and have some lunch. We then return to Namche bazaar to enjoy the rest of the day exploring before getting a good sleep at our comfortable lodge.

The walk continues through the rhododendron forest until we reach Sanasa, which is a major trail junction of Gokyo Valley and the Everest Base Camp. Leaving the Everest Base Camp trail, we follow the stone steps trail that lies on our left hand side and walk towards Mong. From Mong, a slight descent will take us to the bank of the Dudh Koshi River as we cross Phortse Thanga. We hike up till Tenga, following the bank of the Dudh Koshi River. From here, leaving the bank of the river, we further hike up to Dhole through birch and rhododendron forest. The night will be spent at a lodge in Dhole.

Today is the fifth day of the trek and our destination is Machhermo.

As we hike up from Dhole, the vegetation becomes sparse, which is definitely dominated by the magnificent view of the nearing peaks. We first climb a short scenic ridge and head towards north, enjoying the mountain views. A gentle ascend will first take us to Luza, from where we walk down to the river. Then a steep climb will take us to the terminal moraine of Ngozumba glacier. From here, we head towards Machhermo, which is the last major settlement on the way to Gokyo. The night will be spent at a lodge in Machhermo.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Magnificent views of snow capped peaks, tea shops, terminal moraine of Ngozumba glacier and few small settlements.)

We continue towards the second Gokyo lake (Taujung Tsho). Following the west bank of the glacier, we walk up to the third Gokyo lake (Gokyo Tsho). Today is the eighth day of the trek and our destination is Dragnag.

Leaving the Third Lake behind, we start to walk early in the morning as we need to walk across the Ngozumba glacier. We cross the glacier before the sun gets stronger, as during the sunny days the ice melts, making the trail more slippery and difficult to walk. After crossing the glacier, following the east bank of the glacier, we slightly descend to Dragnag. The rest of the day can also be spent hiking nearby hills, which helps to acclimatize. The night will be spent at a lodge in Dragnag.

Then, the trail drops down to the bottom of the Chola pass. The trail here is icy, slippery and difficult to cross. From the base, a steep rocky ascent will take us to the top of the Chola Pass. The top greets you with flapping prayer flag and a wonderful view of Gokyo Valley. After spending some time here, a steep descend following icy (use of crampons recommended) and rocky trail will first take us to the valley, from where Dzongla is fairly an easy walk. The night will be spent at a lodge in Dzongla.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Magnificent view of Ama Dablam & Cholatse and the Gokyo Valley from Cho La pass, flapping prayer flags on top of Chola pass, experience of difficult, icy, slippery and rocky up and downhill trail, and a grand view of Cholatse North face from Dzongla.)

Further ascend from here will finally take us to Lobuche. After having lunch, we also hike a bit and explore the Khumbu Glacier. The night will be spent at a lodge in Lobuche.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Splendid views of mountains and glaciers, tombstone of trekkers who lost their lives in the glacier, view of the Khumbu and Lobuche glacier.)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is the eleventh day of the trek and we finally reach the major destination of the trek, the Everest Base Camp.

Following the west bank of the Khumbu Glacier, the trail continues to ascend till Lobuche pass. Shortly after crossing this pass, we come across a junction of Changri Nup and Changri Shar Glacier that merge to Khumbu Glacier. We walk across the glacier to reach Gorakshep, located at the bottom of Kala Patthar. Leaving the trail that leads to Kala Patthar, we hike up to the base camp of the Everest. Today we start early, in fact, before breakfast to see the early morning sun rays striking the mountains. Initially, we hike for about two hours, which will take us to Kala Pathhar. We enjoy the sunrise view in the mountains, spend some time taking pictures and relishing the view, then we hike down to Gorakshep for breakfast. Following the same route used earlier, we hike down to Lobuche. After walking for some time, we cross Thokla pass and further walk down towards the suspension bridge at Dughla. Food & Accommodation

Image

The accommodation on the Everest Base Camp trek route is basic but it’s all part of the adventure! You’ll be pleased to know that both before and after your trek, you’ll unwind in 5-star accommodation - giving you the perfect chance to relax and recharge in luxury.

What to keep in mind -

  • Be Prepared for Basic Living: While the tea houses are cozy, they are not 5-star hotels. The focus is on providing a safe and warm place to rest rather than luxury.
  • Bring Essentials: A good sleeping bag, earplugs, and a power bank can make your stay more comfortable.
  • Enjoy the Experience: The simplicity of the accommodation is part of the charm of trekking in such a remote and stunning region.

Types of Accommodation

5* Accommodation before & after the trek:
  • The Hotel: Before and after the trek relax in comfort and style at the 5* Hotel Aloft in the heart of Thamel or equivalent.
  • Food: Aloft has a few restaurants such as the W XYZ Bar and Nook restaurant or head out into Kathmandu and try one of the local restaurants
  • Relax: Swimming pool and a gym and even an onsite spa to chill out and relax after your trek
Tea Houses and Lodges:

Image

  • These are the primary types of accommodation along the EBC route. They are simple, family-run establishments that provide a place to rest after a long day of trekking.
  • Rooms are typically twin-sharing with two single beds, a mattress, pillow, and blanket. However, it’s essential to have a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially at higher altitudes. Sleeping bags can be rented for free - please contact us for more details.
Facilities:
  • Bathrooms: Communal bathrooms are the norm - some tea houses have attached bathrooms. Running water can be limited, especially in places like Gorak Shep.
  • Showers: Hot showers are available at lower altitudes, but they come at an extra cost (around £3-£5). At higher altitudes, showers are less common, and many trekkers opt for wet wipes instead.
  • Electricity and WiFi: Electricity is available for charging devices (weather dependent), but it’s not free and can get pricier as you ascend. WiFi is also available in some tea houses, but it’s often slow and comes with a fee.

Food

The food on the Everest Base Camp trek is surprisingly diverse and delicious, catering to both local and Western tastes. You’ll find a mix of hearty local dishes and familiar comfort foods to keep you energised for the trek. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

Local Delights:

Image

  • Dal Bhat: A staple Nepali dish consisting of boiled rice, lentil soup, and side dishes like vegetables and curry. It’s a favorite among trekkers because it’s filling, nutritious, and often comes with unlimited refills!
  • Sherpa Stew: A warm, hearty soup with vegetables, noodles, and sometimes meat, although we advise a vegetarian diet whilst on trek to avoid food poisoning which is very common to get from meat up in the mountains.
  • Veggie Momos: Our favourite - Nepali dumplings filled with vegetables, served steamed or fried.
  • Garlic Soup: Not only tasty but also believed to help with acclimatisation and prevent altitude sickness.
Western Options:
  • Pizzas and Pasta: Yes, you can find these on the trail! They might not be gourmet, but they’re comforting after a long day.
  • Sandwiches and Soups: Light and easy options for lunch.
  • Macaroni Dishes: A simple yet satisfying choice.
  • Chips and Fried Rice: Great for a quick carb boost.
Breakfast:
  • Tibetan bread with jam, pancakes, porridge, eggs (boiled, fried, or scrambled), and hot drinks like tea or coffee are common breakfast options.
Snacks:
  • You can also find snacks like chocolate bars, biscuits, and energy bars at tea houses or bring your own for the trek.

The tea houses and lodges along the route offer menus with these options, and the quality is generally good. Meals are freshly prepared, and the guides will help you place your orders, especially during busy seasons. The dining areas often have a cozy atmosphere with a hot stove, making it a great place to relax and socialise.

Water:

In March 2019, we became the first UK high-altitude trekking company to introduce purified water filters across all of our Nepal treks, reducing reliance on single-use plastic bottles and providing clean, great-tasting water without chemicals. Previously, trekkers depended on bottled water or purification tablets - neither of which were sustainable or ideal. With each trekker potentially using over 50 plastic bottles per trip, the impact added up fast. In our first season, this initiative prevented the use of around 16,500 one-litre plastic bottles in the Everest region - the equivalent height of five Ben Nevis mountains stacked! While filtered water isn’t possible in every location due to limited water sources, we use the system wherever conditions allow, as part of our ongoing commitment to responsible and sustainable trekking. In the areas where it’s not possible due to limited water sources there will be access to buy bottled water.

FAQs

The Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Valley Trek with EverTrek costs between £2,500 and £2,650, depending on your chosen departure date. This includes return flights between Kathmandu (or Ramechhap) and Lukla, all accommodation, meals during the trek, permits (including Sagarmatha National Park and TIMS), and full support from our experienced local guides and porters.

How fit do I need to be for the Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Valley trek?

This trek is considered challenging and is suited for trekkers with a good level of fitness and prior hiking experience. You’ll be walking for 5–8 hours per day on varied terrain, including steep ascents and descents.

You'll reach some incredible high points such as Gokyo Ri (5,360m), Cho La Pass (5,420m), and Kala Patthar (5,550m), which require stamina and steady acclimatisation. A good level of endurance and mental resilience will help you get the most out of this adventure.

Your training should focus on improving cardio endurance, leg strength, and trail stamina. Activities like hill walking, hiking with a loaded backpack (6–10kg), stair climbing, cycling, or running are all great.
Aim for 4–5 training sessions per week, and try to include multi-day hikes or back-to-back long walks to build your endurance for the trail.
EverTrek also runs UK-based training weekends in places like the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia—perfect for preparing both physically and mentally.

Most major expenses are included, but we suggest budgeting £20–£45 per day for personal extras such as snacks, soft drinks, charging devices, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and tipping.
Bring Nepalese Rupees in small denominations for purchases in teahouses and remote villages where card payments aren’t accepted.

Yes, hot showers are available at most teahouses, especially in the lower-altitude areas. As you ascend, facilities become more basic, and hot water may be limited or cost extra. Many trekkers choose to use wet wipes or do quick washes at higher elevations where the air is colder and water is less available.

The best trekking seasons are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Pleasant weather, clear skies, and blooming rhododendrons

  • Autumn (September to November) – Crisp air, stable conditions, and panoramic views

These seasons offer the safest and most scenic conditions for trekking and crossing Cho La Pass.

Tipping is a great way to thank your crew for their hard work. We recommend tipping around 10% of your trip cost. For a trek priced between £2,500 and £2,650, this works out to roughly £250–£265 in total, which is shared between your guide, porters, and any assistant staff.
Your guide will help you manage the tipping process at the end of the trek if needed.

Altitude sickness is a real risk on this trek, especially as you cross Cho La Pass (5,420m) and summit Kala Patthar (5,550m). To reduce your risk:

  • Stick to the gradual ascent itinerary with built-in acclimatisation days

  • Drink 3–4 litres of water daily

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking

  • Learn the signs: headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness

  • Speak to your GP about using Diamox (acetazolamide)

  • Let your guide know immediately if symptoms arise—early action makes a big difference

Yes, your combined luggage (duffel and daypack) must not exceed 15kg, due to restrictions on the domestic flight to Lukla.

In addition, we enforce a 15kg max per duffel bag to ensure our porters' safety and wellbeing. You’ll carry a daypack with water, snacks, layers, and daily essentials.

We recommend packing smart, using lightweight gear, and picking up bulkier items like snacks or toiletries in Kathmandu.
