Difficulty Gauge

Difficulty:

Challenging

How challenging is the trek?

The Everest Base Camp trek is a challenging yet achievable adventure for most people with a reasonable level of fitness. It’s not a technical climb, but the combination of high altitude, long days of trekking, and varying terrain makes it a physically demanding experience.

To gauge your readiness, here’s some info to help:

  • Before taking your trip you should aim to be able to hike for 4–6 hours with a backpack weighing around 6–8kg.

  • You should aim to include some uphill and downhill sections during these hikes and aim for a total elevation gain of 500–800m. If you can do this without feeling completely drained, you’re on the right path.

  • Consecutive Day Trekking: Do back-to-back hikes over a weekend to mimic the multi-day nature of the trek.

If Everest Base Camp is on your bucket list but you don’t quite feel ready fitness wise, you can plan in some simple training over the course of a few months knowing that this adventure is completely achievable.

What To Expect On The Trek

  1. Altitude Challenges: The trek reaches an altitude of 5,550m (alt) at Kalapatthar, and the lack of oxygen at higher altitudes can make even simple tasks feel more strenuous.

  2. Duration: The trek typically lasts 11 days, with 8 days ascending and 3 days descending but in reality it’s up and down from start to finish. You’ll be walking for 5–8 hours a day on average.

  3. Terrain: The trail includes steep ascents, descents, rocky paths, glacial terrain and suspension bridges. It’s not a walk in the park, but it’s not a technical climb either.

  4. Weather: Temperatures can drop well below zero, especially at night, so you’ll need to be prepared for cold conditions.

What customers say about us

15-Day Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary

Welcome to Kathmandu, The capital city of Nepal.

Today is your first day with EverTrek. You will be greeted by one of our company representatives at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) as they pick you up and transport you to your hotel. Today, you will have a chance to rest and relax after your journey to Nepal, and may also have the opportunity to meet some of the team and discuss some details of your upcoming trek.

You will enjoy a group meal with your fellow trekkers. You'll be taken to one of the most popular local restaurants where you can enjoy Nepali food along with cultural music and ethnic dance.

Meals included: Dinner

Today you’ll explore the cultural and historical highlights of Kathmandu Valley, visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites and enjoying lunch at one of our favourite city viewpoints.

At 1,300m above sea level, it’s important to get moving today to aid your acclimatisation.

After your Kathmandu tour, you'll drive about 5 hours to Mulkot, where EverTrek provides your accommodation and evening meal. An early start the next morning (around 3:30–4:30 am) takes you to Ramechhap Airport for a short flight to Lukla. Flying from Ramechhap increases the chances of a smooth, weather-friendly journey.

Due to ongoing upgrades at Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport, flights to Lukla now primarily operate from Ramechhap Airport, a change introduced by Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAN) in 2019 and expected to continue. While a few flights still leave from Kathmandu, they are limited and often delayed, so it’s almost certain your journey will start via Ramechhap.

On your return, you'll fly back to Ramechhap before making the adventurous 6–7 hour drive to Kathmandu, with stops to rest along the way.

EverTrek covers all extra accommodation and logistics at no additional cost. We just ask for a little patience, your Himalayan adventure is our top priority!

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Time to get that early flight to Lukla Airport.

It all starts here!

The flight to Lukla is one of our favourite parts of the trek. Experiencing the beautiful scenery of the Himalayas from above and landing at the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla is on many people's bucket lists. Upon landing, you will meet the remaining crew and porters, who will be assisting you throughout the trek. Shortly after this, you will start the trek on the stone paved trail through Lukla and pass prayer rocks, mani walls, and small Sherpa settlements. Here you can sample some of the most beautiful rural scenes on the entire trek. This first walk is quite short as you descend down from Lukla towards Phakding. When you reach Phakding you will grab some lunch and have the afternoon to explore the village or even hike up to the nearby Monastery or 'Gompa'. The night will be spent in one of the lodges in Phakding.

*note* See day 2 notes on Ramechhap

(Highlights of the day: Wonderful aerial view of the mountains on the flight to Lukla, ‘Mani’ prayer rocks, Phakding village and ‘Gompas’ monastery)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After having a delicious breakfast at your lodge in Phakding, you will leave the village and head towards your destination for today, Namche Bazaar.

You will follow the train along the Dudh Koshi River, taking in the views and soaking up the energy of the Khumbu region.

You will cross three suspension bridges and, with plenty of rest stops in local tea houses along the route, will hike uphill through the settlements of Zapute, Toktok, Benkar and Chumoa, all the way to Monjo. Monjo is recognised as the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park and here the group leaders and guides will take care of the necessary entry formalities whilst you enjoy a hot drink and the chance to browse the local shops. Once the formalities are completed, you will continue with your journey on a steep descent, passing over more suspension bridges until your trail starts to lead upward toward Namche Bazaar.

It is a tough two-hour hike to reach Namche Bazaar but here you will have your first view of Mt. Everest along with other incredible peaks like Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Kusum Khangru. The night will be spent in a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is the first day of two days set aside for acclimatisation.

Namche is an essential acclimatisation stop so you will stay as active as you can. You can either head up to the beautiful village of Thame, which is an old Sherpa village, or the villages of Khumjung/Khunde/Khongde. Hotel Everest view is along this route and if the weather is clear, you will get a great view of Mt. Everest and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. If you have time, pay a visit to the Mountaineering museum or you can simply spend your time enjoying cafés, shops, bakeries and restaurants in Namche Bazaar. The night will also be spent in a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Thame Sherpa village, Khumjung/Khunde/Khongde, Hotel Everest View, cafes, bakeries, shops, restaurant etc)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you'll depart Namche Bazaar and follow the flat trail that leads you to the village of Kyamjuma.

You will then descend to the bottom of the valley where you'll enjoy lunch next to the Dudhkoshi River at 3250m. The views on this section of trail are some of the best on the trek. Enjoy views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Ama Dablam and a very close up view of Thamserku. After lunch, you will tackle the long climb up to Tengboche and visit the famous Tengboche Monastery. This zig-zagging route takes about 2-3 hours but the journey is so worth it. The night will be spent in a lodge in Tengboche or the small village 100m below called Deboche.

(Highlights of the day: Great views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam and Mt. Thamserku, and Tengboche Monastery - The highest Monastery in the world.)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You will start the day's hike descending down to the riverside through lush woodland and cross the river on another suspension bridge.

You will then spend the next two-three hours gradually climbing up the valley to the beautiful settlement of Pangboche (3,860m/12,664ft). Here you can spot several Chortens and Mani walls as you walk through the village. You can also get a close-up view the majestic Ama Dablam. After some lunch, you will ascend towards Dingboche where a fairly moderate walk leads you to the Imja Valley. Here, on climbing the last and steepest climb of the day, you will finally reach Dingboche. The night is spent in a lodge in Dingboche.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Lush forest, steep climbs, and magnificent Chortens and Mani walls.)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After a refreshing breakfast, you can climb the ridge on the north behind the village to appreciate the magnificent view of Mt. Ama Dablam.

The vantage point on the ridge also gives you a chance to observe Imja Khola Valley and the charming fields and pastures of Dingboche and Mt. Lhotse and numerous other peaks that are visible from Dingboche. The night is spent at Dingboche.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today starts with the ascent through the Khumbu Khola Valley.

The views of Cholatse and Taboche peak on your left are awesome and these mountains will keep you company for the majority of today. You will also get a glimpse of the Chola Lake and the majestic view of Mt. Pumori (7,138m/23,418ft). You will then make your way across the glacial river and stop for lunch in the tiny settlement of Dughla. After lunch you'll ascend for about an hour or so until you reach the memorial hill. It's a very powerful place with numerous memorials of Sherpas and other climbers who perished on Mt. Everest and the other surrounding peaks. You will stop here for 20 minutes or so before heading up the Khumbu Valley to reach the village of Lobuche.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: The view of Chola Lake along with Mt. Pumori, memorial hill, views of other peaks like Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Mahalangur Himal.)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is it! Base Camp day!

This is probably the toughest part of the trek as you ascend over 5000m towards the historic Everest base camp. You will be up early so make sure you wrap up warm as the weather and temperatures will be freezing at this time of day. The trail gets a little difficult as you traverse the glacial moraine and find a route to the settlement of Gorak Shep. Here you will grab some lunch and fill up your water bottles before heading further up the valley. As you get closer and closer, you will spot the Everest peak and the north ridge of Everest along with Mt. Pumori, Mt Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse and so on. Just a small ascent from here leads you to a 360-degree vista of snowy mountains - one of the most awe-inspiring views you will ever see. As you walk thought the rocky trail, you'll step onto the glacier and make your way over to Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,575ft).

You have done it! A massive achievement and something you will remember forever.

Once you've hugged your teammates and got those Base Camp photos that you'll treasure forever, you will head back towards Gorak Shep where you will stay for the night. (5,160m/16,929ft)

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Views of Mt Everest, reaching the historic Everest Base Camp and box ticked.)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

If you're feeling up to it, you have the opportunity to wake up at 4:00am to make your way up to the summit of Kala Pattar at 5545m.

This will take you a couple of hours of hard uphill hiking but what a reward - a sunrise view of Mt Everest! Watch the first rays of sunshine hit the summit on Everest and take in the views. Breathtaking! Once you descend and meet the other group members who opted for a lie-in, you will head back down the Khumbu Valley towards the village of Pangboche. This is a long day but as you descend you will notice the huge change in altitude and the increase in oxygen. We do sometimes stay in Pheriche instead of Pangboche depending on how the group is doing.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Sunrise view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and Ama Dablam, summit a 5500m peak, enjoy the Khumbu Valley on the descent)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today you will follow the flat trail down towards Tengboche.

If there is time you can visit the Monastery once again, or head for a tea break before you descend the steep section back down to the Dudh Koshi River. You will cross the first bridge over the river and climb for two hours back up towards Namche Bazaar. The walking definitely gets easier as you descend but the legs will be tired after the last eight days or so of walking, so you will take your time today and go easy. You will spend the night in Namche Bazaar celebrating with a visit to the worlds highest Irish Bar. The hot showers and home comforts provided in Namche Bazaar make this a great place to stop on the way back down.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Local Sherpa villages, Tengboche Monastery, Guinness at the worlds highest Irish Bar )

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The final day of trekking and the long journey from Namche Bazaar back down to Lukla.

You will retrace your steps back across the Hilary Bridge and through the local Sherpa villages before stopping for lunch in Phakding. Enjoy the last day of epic mountain views, pine forests, Sherpa villages, prayer stones, flapping prayer flags that can be found along the flat route back to Lukla. Once you pass through the Lukla trekking gate and reach your tea house, you will relax and enjoy the last day with the mountain team. You will share food with your porters and guides and celebrate the fantastic trek.

Meals included: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

(Highlights of the day: Flat trail, open plains, Rhododendron and Pine forests, Sherpa villages, prayer stones, and flapping prayer flags.)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is your last day in the Khumbu region of Nepal.

Our porters will carry your luggage to the airport where we have our final farewell. Once the plane lands at the airport, we will directly board the plane and fly back to Kathmandu early in the morning, enjoying the scenic view once again from the sky. A comfortable private vehicle will be awaiting our arrival in Kathmandu Airport, which will safely escort you to the hotel. In the evening, we meet for some time to discuss your trek and get feedback. The night will be spent at a tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu.

*Important to note*

As with your first flight to Lukla, this journey may also be via Ramechhap Airport rather than Kathmandu. Once your short flight lands at Ramechhap, the journey then to Kathmandu will be the long and bumpy drive back to Hotel Aloft, stopping for breaks along the way. This drive, dependent on traffic, will likely be between 5-7 hours.

You can read more information about flying to and from Lukla via Ramechhap, here.

Meals included: Breakfast

(Highlights of the day: Wonderful aerial view of the terrain from the plane, hotel in Kathmandu)

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Today is the last day of your trip in Nepal with EverTrek.

If your flight is scheduled early morning, then one of our company representatives will escort you to the airport as per your flight departure time. If your flight is scheduled for later in the evening, you can go shopping and collect a few mementos or simply hang around the shopping areas in Kathmandu.

If you have booked your flights with a spare day or two and have requested we arrange your additional accommodation for you, then you will be able to remain at the hotel until your day of departure and still benefit from the airport transfers. Alternatively, if you have booked an additional trip add-on, such as Chitwan National Safari, it is on this day that you will travel to the park. More info below.

Food & Accommodation

The accommodation on the Everest Base Camp trek route is basic but it’s all part of the adventure! You’ll be pleased to know that both before and after your trek, you’ll unwind in 5-star accommodation - giving you the perfect chance to relax and recharge in luxury.

What to keep in mind -

  • Be Prepared for Basic Living: While the tea houses are cozy, they are not 5-star hotels. The focus is on providing a safe and warm place to rest rather than luxury.
  • Bring Essentials: A good sleeping bag, earplugs, and a power bank can make your stay more comfortable.
  • Enjoy the Experience: The simplicity of the accommodation is part of the charm of trekking in such a remote and stunning region.

Types of Accommodation

5* Accommodation before & after the trek:
  • The Hotel: Before and after the trek relax in comfort and style at the 5* Hotel Aloft in the heart of Thamel or equivalent.
  • Food: Aloft has a few restaurants such as the W XYZ Bar and Nook restaurant or head out into Kathmandu and try one of the local restaurants
  • Relax: Swimming pool and a gym and even an onsite spa to chill out and relax after your trek

Tea Houses and Lodges:

Image

  • These are the primary types of accommodation along the EBC route. They are simple, family-run establishments that provide a place to rest after a long day of trekking.
  • Rooms are typically twin-sharing with two single beds, a mattress, pillow, and blanket. However, it’s essential to have a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially at higher altitudes. Sleeping bags can be rented for free - please contact us for more details.

Facilities:
  • Bathrooms: Communal bathrooms are the norm - some tea houses have attached bathrooms. Running water can be limited, especially in places like Gorak Shep.
  • Showers: Hot showers are available at lower altitudes, but they come at an extra cost (around £3-£5). At higher altitudes, showers are less common, and many trekkers opt for wet wipes instead.
  • Electricity and WiFi: Electricity is available for charging devices (weather dependent), but it’s not free and can get pricier as you ascend. WiFi is also available in some tea houses, but it’s often slow and comes with a fee.

Food

The food on the Everest Base Camp trek is surprisingly diverse and delicious, catering to both local and Western tastes. You’ll find a mix of hearty local dishes and familiar comfort foods to keep you energised for the trek. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

Local Delights:

Image

  • Dal Bhat: A staple Nepali dish consisting of boiled rice, lentil soup, and side dishes like vegetables and curry. It’s a favorite among trekkers because it’s filling, nutritious, and often comes with unlimited refills!
  • Sherpa Stew: A warm, hearty soup with vegetables, noodles, and sometimes meat, although we advise a vegetarian diet whilst on trek to avoid food poisoning which is very common to get from meat up in the mountains.
  • Veggie Momos: Our favourite - Nepali dumplings filled with vegetables, served steamed or fried.
  • Garlic Soup: Not only tasty but also believed to help with acclimatisation and prevent altitude sickness.

Western Options:
  • Pizzas and Pasta: Yes, you can find these on the trail! They might not be gourmet, but they’re comforting after a long day.
  • Sandwiches and Soups: Light and easy options for lunch.
  • Macaroni Dishes: A simple yet satisfying choice.
  • Chips and Fried Rice: Great for a quick carb boost.

Breakfast:
  • Tibetan bread with jam, pancakes, porridge, eggs (boiled, fried, or scrambled), and hot drinks like tea or coffee are common breakfast options.

Snacks:
  • You can also find snacks like chocolate bars, biscuits, and energy bars at tea houses or bring your own for the trek.

The tea houses and lodges along the route offer menus with these options, and the quality is generally good. Meals are freshly prepared, and the guides will help you place your orders, especially during busy seasons. The dining areas often have a cozy atmosphere with a hot stove, making it a great place to relax and socialise.

Water:

In March 2019, we became the first UK high-altitude trekking company to introduce purified water filters across all of our Nepal treks, reducing reliance on single-use plastic bottles and providing clean, great-tasting water without chemicals. Previously, trekkers depended on bottled water or purification tablets - neither of which were sustainable or ideal. With each trekker potentially using over 50 plastic bottles per trip, the impact added up fast. In our first season, this initiative prevented the use of around 16,500 one-litre plastic bottles in the Everest region - the equivalent height of five Ben Nevis mountains stacked! While filtered water isn’t possible in every location due to limited water sources, we use the system wherever conditions allow, as part of our ongoing commitment to responsible and sustainable trekking. In the areas where it’s not possible due to limited water sources there will be access to buy bottled water.

FAQs

The Everest Base Camp trek with EverTrek typically costs between £2,450 and £2,550, depending on the season and itinerary. This includes return flights within Nepal, accommodation, meals during the trek, permits, and full support from our expert local guides and porters.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but a good level of fitness is essential. You’ll be trekking for 5–8 hours a day over varied terrain and at high altitude. Regular cardio exercise, hill walking, and strength training will help prepare you. With the right preparation and determination, most people in good health can complete the trek successfully.

Training is essential for getting the most out of your trek. Focus on cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and endurance. Activities like hiking with a rucksack, stair climbing, hill walking, running, and cycling are ideal.

We recommend training 3–4 times a week in the lead-up to your trek. To help you prepare, EverTrek also offers UK-based training weekends in areas such as the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, perfect for building confidence and meeting fellow trekkers.

Everest Base Camp itself is at an altitude of 5,364 metres (17,598 feet). However, the highest point you will reach on the trek is Kala Patthar at 5,550 metres (18,209 feet), which offers panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks.

Most of your costs are covered in the trip price, but you’ll want extra for personal expenses such as snacks, soft drinks, hot showers, battery charging, Wi-Fi access, and souvenirs. We recommend budgeting around £20 to £45 per day.

Yes, hot showers are available at most teahouses in the lower parts of the trail. As you ascend, shower facilities become more basic and may not always be available. Where they are offered, expect to pay a small fee. Many trekkers choose to minimise showers at higher altitudes due to the cold and limited facilities.

The ideal times to trek to Everest Base Camp are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Pleasant temperatures, blossoming rhododendrons, and clear views.
  • Autumn (September to November) – Stable weather, clear skies, and excellent visibility.

These seasons offer the most reliable conditions and the best chance of stunning Himalayan views.

Tipping is an important and appreciated part of the culture in Nepal. We recommend tipping around 10% of your trip cost. For a £2,500 trek, this works out to about £250, which is typically pooled and distributed among your trekking crew, including guides and porters.

Altitude sickness can affect anyone, so it’s important to take precautions:

  • Following a gradual ascent with built-in acclimatisation days, all EverTrek itineraries are designed with this in mind.
  • Stay well hydrated, drinking 3–4 litres of water per day.
  • Avoid alcohol during the trek.
  • Be aware of symptoms, including headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
  • Take medication such as acetazolamide (Diamox) if recommended by your GP.
  • Listen to your body and communicate with your guide as altitude sickness can be managed as long as it's not ignored.

If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s vital to descend to a lower altitude, your guide will assist you if needed.

Yes, there is a 15kg weight limit for your checked duffel bag and carry-on daypack combined on the domestic flight to Lukla. This includes all your trekking gear. It can be a bit of a challenge, but with a smart packing strategy, it’s entirely manageable. We recommend packing light, using multi-purpose clothing, and buying heavier or bulkier items like snacks or toiletries in Lukla to help stay within the limit.
