Kilimanjaro - Hut to Hut

Dates & Prices Date range icon
Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895m, is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the legendary Seven Summits. Our unique 7-day itinerary follows the Marangu Route through Kilimanjaro’s changing landscapes to the Roof of Africa at Uhuru Peak. As the only route with mountain hut accommodation, Marangu offers the welcome comfort of sleeping indoors in a bed each night during the trek, rather than camping in tents. The huts are simple and shared, but they make this a popular choice for trekkers who prefer a little more comfort and shelter after a day on the trail. Along the way, you’ll hike beneath rainforest canopies, cross open moorland and climb through dramatic alpine desert as the summit draws closer. After an unforgettable night-time ascent, you’ll reach the highest point on the continent as morning breaks above the clouds, before beginning your descent with memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

10-Day Kilimanjaro - Hut to Hut Itinerary

Jambo! Welcome to Tanzania — your Kilimanjaro adventure begins now!

We recommend booking your international flights to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in the morning of Day 1. This will give you time to settle in, meet your team and start your EverTrek adventure refreshed.

One of our friendly team members will be there to greet you at the airport and transfer you to the vibrant Springlands Hotel in Moshi. On a clear day, look out the window to your left, and you may get your first sight of the mighty Kilimanjaro.

After your journey, today is all about unwinding. Take a hot shower, stretch out, soak up the atmosphere, and start settling into the rhythm of Tanzanian life. This is your time to relax and recharge before the real adventure kicks off.

Exclusively for EverTrek customers, you’ll be able to book your complimentary 30-minute massage when you check in at Springlands Hotel. This is available either today or tomorrow, depending on your arrival time and availability in the massage parlour.

Meals included: Dinner
Accommodation: Springlands Hotel, Moshi

Today is all about exploring the vibrant local area around Moshi, nestled at the foot of mighty Kilimanjaro.

You’ll stretch your legs and venture out past lush rice paddies and through shaded forest paths as you make your way towards the heart of Moshi town. Along the way, you’ll soak up the sights, sounds, and scents of everyday life in Tanzania. At the bustling markets, you’ll get a real taste of local culture, a perfect way to ease into the rhythm of the region.

If today falls on a weekday, there may also be an opportunity to visit one of the nearby schools, a chance to connect with the local community and see a different side of life here. Later in the day, you’ll have your all-important trek briefing and meet your mountain guide. This usually takes place at either 11am or 4pm. The exact time and location will be confirmed with you on Day 1.

After your tour and briefing, the rest of the day is yours to relax and make final preparations. Gather your gear, check your kit, and soak in the excitement. Tomorrow, the adventure truly begins!

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Springlands Hotel, Moshi

Today begins with your first steps on the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro!

We start the day by driving to the Marangu Gate (approx. 1.5 hours), your entrance point into the Kilimanjaro National Park. Here your guides will handle park registration and permits, while you psyche yourself up for the journey ahead.

Once we are ready to start trekking, you’ll take a winding path up through the rainforest, protected from the sun by the lush, green canopy. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife moving through the trees, including the striking black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Tonight you’ll rest your head on a bed at the Mandara Huts, the first stop on the trail, sitting at 2,700m.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 8km/4-5 hours

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mandara Huts

Today the adventure continues, leading to the largest hut site on the mountain.

After a hearty breakfast, you continue your trek through the lush rainforest, and out into the moorlands zone. As you ascend, the vegetation gradually changes, giving way to a more rugged and open landscape.

As you break cover from the trees, you’ll catch your first real glimpse of the famous volcanic crater Kibo, your final destination in the coming days. You’ll also spot Mawenzi Peak to the right, the third highest mountain in Africa.

Upon reaching Horombo Huts (3,720m), you’ll settle into the shared mountain huts and enjoy a warm dinner to refuel for the following day.

Be sure to rest as you adjust to the altitude, and look down the mountain to the vibrant lights of Moshi as the sun sets.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 12km/5-6 hours

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Huts

Today is all about acclimatising your body.

Your hike today is a short acclimatisation route up to Zebra Rocks, a striking geological feature located at 4,010m. This hike is important, as it will help your body better cope with the upcoming higher elevations.

After taking a well-earned break at more than 4,000m for the first time, you’ll descend to Horombo Huts, following our tried and tested method of ‘climb high, sleep low’.

Settle back into the hut accommodation and relax for the following day. Be sure to bring a book or something to keep you occupied for the down time this afternoon.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 5km (3-4 hours)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Huts

We've built a second acclimatisation day into the itinerary to give your body even more time to adapt to the altitude before summit night.

Setting off once again from Horombo Huts, your guide will lead you on another acclimatisation hike, helping your body adjust as you venture higher up the mountain.

Today's trek takes you beyond yesterday's high point towards Mawenzi Ridge (4,350m), where you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. After taking in the scenery, you'll descend back to Horombo Huts for another night of sleeping low, ready for the trek to Kibo Huts tomorrow.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 8km (4-5 hours)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Huts

Today we head for base camp, ready for the final push to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Leaving camp, the trail winds slowly up over the ridge onto an area known as The Saddle. This vast, lunar-like desert stretches between the towering Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Although the terrain is stark looking, the views of the towering peaks either side of you are truly awe-inspiring.

Upon arriving mid-afternoon at Kibo Huts (4,720m), it’s time for an early dinner and rest, conserving your energy for the upcoming summit attempt. Be sure to take it easy when moving around camp, as the high altitude here is certainly noticeable.

Make sure your head torch is ready, your batteries are charged and your daypack is prepared before trying to contain your excitement and get some sleep.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 10km (5-6 hours)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Kibo Huts

Today is what all those months of training have led to, reaching the summit of Africa’s highest mountain!

Around midnight, you’ll be awoken for a snack and final gear preparation, ready for the summit push. Setting off in the dark, you’ll follow your guide up the mountain in single file. This will be the most challenging section of your hike, but the pace will be deliberately slow and steady, helping you conserve energy and manage the effects of altitude as your guides closely monitor the group.

After around six hours, you’ll reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Stop here to catch your breath, and if the conditions are good you’ll be rewarded with arguably one of the greatest sunrises on Earth, looking out over the African continent, silhouetted by Mawenzi Peak in the distance.

From here you’ll traverse the crater rim for around 1.5-2 hours, passing Stella Point (5,756m) and the Rebmann Glacier, onto Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point on Kilimanjaro.

You’ve done it, welcome to the Roof of Africa!

After taking in the incredible views, alongside those all important summit photos beside the iconic Uhuru Peak sign, it’s time to retrace your steps back down the mountain, taking in every breath as you feel the extra oxygen in the air.

We descend back to Horombo Huts to recover, where a hot celebration dinner awaits, before your final night sleeping on the mountain.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 22km (14-16 hours)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Huts

After your last breakfast on the mountain, you’ll descend back through the diverse moorland and lush rainforest zones, making your way down to Marangu Gate, before saying a heartfelt goodbye to the mountain that’s both tested and inspired you from the first day.

Be sure to have some cash with you to check out the gift shop, and maybe even treat yourself to a well earned beer!

After your guide carries out the formalities with the National Park, you’ll be transferred back to Springlands Hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower, clean clothes and a well-earned rest await you. The pool will be open for a refreshing dip, before your final celebratory meal at the hotel in the evening.

Congratulations again, you’ve conquered Mount Kilimanjaro!

Hiking Distance: Approx. 20km (6-7 hours)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Springlands Hotel, Moshi

Your Kilimanjaro adventure may be over, but the memories will last a lifetime.

After an unforgettable journey, one of our team members will transfer you from Springlands Hotel back to Kilimanjaro International Airport in time for your onward flight.

As you say goodbye to Tanzania, take a moment to reflect on everything you've achieved, from rainforest trails to glacier views, and of course, standing on the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.

What a journey, and one you’ll never forget. This is an incredible country that will linger long in your memory, and you will likely want to return in the not too distant future.

Not ready to go home? Why not add a Kilimanjaro trek trip extension to your itinerary? From epic safaris to beach relaxation, you can keep the magical experience going.

Springlands Hotel, located on the edge of Moshi town, is a comfortable base with great facilities, designed to prepare you for the challenge ahead and help you recover afterwards.

Here you'll stay in twin-share rooms with en-suite bathrooms, with a restaurant and bar, swimming pool and free Wi-Fi access for relaxation. If you need single-occupancy for your stay at Springlands Hotel, please do speak with the team.

There's a shop on-site to buy small, essential items and also gear rental services available.

Springlands Hotel will help you acclimatise to the vibrant town of Moshi and you'll also have chance to meet your fellow EverTrekkers before you head to the trails.

Mountain Hut AccommodationNights 3-8

During your trek, you’ll stay in traditional A-frame mountain huts, sleeping in shared rooms with between 4 and 20 beds. Depending on how busy the mountain is, you may share the huts with trekkers from other groups.

The accommodation is simple, but sleeping indoors in a bed rather than camping in a tent offers welcome comfort and shelter at the end of each day. In some of the huts there are plug sockets, but this can't be guaranteed, and power runs from solar power. There is also Wi-Fi available at the hut sites, but this is fairly unreliable, so shouldn't be counted upon.

Meals are served in communal dining areas within the larger huts, creating a warm and sociable place to enjoy hearty mountain food, share stories from the trail and meet fellow trekkers.

You’ll need to bring a sleeping bag for warmth, but a bed and mattress will be provided in the huts.

Pratical Tips for Accommodation
1Be Prepared for Basic Living

During your trek you'll experience basic living, but rest assured it's all part of the adventure. Embrace it, it certainly adds to the experience!

2Bring Essentials

A good sleeping bag, earplugs, inflatable camping pillow and a power bank can make your stay more comfortable.

3Enjoy the Experience

The simplicity of the accommodation is part of the charm of trekking in such a remote and stunning region.

How We Make Water Safer For Our Trekkers
How We Make Water Safer For Our Trekkers

One of the most important aspects of acclimatisation is drinking enough water to avoid dehydration (we recommend 4-5 litres per day!). As you go higher up the mountain, keeping well hydrated will help reduce the risk of getting symptoms of altitude sickness.

Our team will collect water from glacier-fed streams along the way. This will then be filtered or treated (usually boiled) to ensure it is safe to drink. We’ll provide you with plenty of safe, filtered/treated water every day to ensure that you're in the best possible shape to take on this incredible adventure.

You’ll need a refillable water bottle or hydration bladder to make staying hydrated easy during the trekking days. Taking a refillable bottle or hydration bladder will also help reduce the environmental impact of the trek and reduce waste. Many of our EverTrekkers find that a combination of both a bottle and water bladder works well for their needs, especially if you want to use a separate bottle for any electrolytes you plan to take.

Filter Water Wherever You Go

For extra peace of mind on your adventure, our branded Water-to-Go bottles filter up to 99.9999% of contaminants from non-saltwater sources while helping reduce single-use plastic.

Use code evertrek20 to receive 20% discount at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Staying hydrated is extremely important when trekking Kilimanjaro. Water is collected from mountain water sources along the route and filtered or treated before drinking. We’ll provide you with plenty of safe drinking water each day.

You’ll need to bring refillable water bottles or a hydration bladder so you can carry enough during the trekking days.

Yes. While you'll have a bed and mattress in the mountain huts, you'll still need to bring a warm sleeping bag suitable for Kilimanjaro, as temperatures can fall well below freezing at higher altitudes.

Yes. Our mountain chefs can cater for most dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan and many food allergies or intolerances. Just let us know your requirements before you travel and we'll ensure they're communicated to our team in Tanzania.

There are no showers on Kilimanjaro, so we recommend bringing biodegradable soaps, wet wipes, and a flannel to stay clean during the trek. The EverTrek team will provide hot water every morning so you can have a quick wash before you start the day.

Yes. You’ll sleep in shared mountain huts with a bed and mattress provided throughout the trek. The huts are simple and can become very cold at night, so you’ll still need to bring a warm, good-quality sleeping bag suitable for Kilimanjaro.

Difficulty Gauge

Difficulty:

Challenging

How challenging is the trek?

Mount Kilimanjaro might not require ropes, crampons or mountaineering skills, but don’t let that fool you, it’s still a high-altitude summit that demands serious respect. At 5,895m, Uhuru Peak is higher than Everest Base Camp, and the summit of Mont Blanc.

The trek itself is non-technical, but the altitude, summit night, and consecutive days of climbing make it a real physical and mental test, even for experienced trekkers.

Having said that, it’s one of the most achievable “big mountain” summits in the world, but preparation is key.

Training Plan

Here’s how to know if you’re ready:

Pre-Trek Fitness Prep

Before climbing Kili, you should aim to:

  • Trek for 6 to 8 hours a day, (except Summit night which is 12+ hours) carrying a 6 to 10kg daypack
  • Handle long uphill sections, including altitude gains of 800–1,200m on summit day
  • Get used to multi-day hiking, especially on consecutive days with no full rest days
  • Train with a mix of hill walking, stair climbing, cardio workouts, and back-to-back training days

Even if you’re not there yet, Kili is very achievable with a few months of focused prep. And because it’s non-technical, it’s a great choice for first-time high-altitude trekkers aiming for a true summit experience.

What to expect on the trek

Altitude Challenges

Altitude is the single biggest challenge on Kilimanjaro. Most routes are designed with acclimatisation in mind, but there’s still a lot of altitude gain in a short amount of time. You’ll be sleeping well above 3,000m for most of the trek and climbing above 5,800m on summit night.

Symptoms of altitude sickness, like headaches, nausea, or fatigue, are common. Your guides will monitor your health daily, and your success will often depend on pacing, hydration, and how well your body adjusts.

Duration

Our itinerary is 10 days from arrival in Tanzania to your departure day with 7 days on the mountain. Most days involve 5 to 7 hours of trekking, except for summit night, which is the toughest day by far with 10 to 14 hours of hiking, mostly in the dark, with a steep descent after reaching the summit.

Terrain

The route takes you through five distinct climate zones, from rainforest to arctic-like summit terrain. Expect:

  • Muddy jungle trails in the lower sections
  • Rocky ridges, alpine desert, and volcanic scree slopes
  • Summit night involves loose volcanic gravel, cold wind, and steep switchbacks

The terrain isn’t technical, but the lack of oxygen and long summit push make it feel much harder than the altitude numbers suggest.

Weather

Kilimanjaro’s weather is famously unpredictable. Expect everything from tropical heat to freezing summit temperatures, often on the same day. Summit night will likely be below zero with wind chill, so good layering is essential.

There isn't a single "best" Kilimanjaro route - it really comes down to the type of experience you're looking for.

Our Marangu Route has been thoughtfully extended from the standard 5 or 6-day itinerary to a unique 7-day trek, including two dedicated acclimatisation hikes. This gives your body more time to adapt to the altitude while also offering the comfort of sleeping indoors in shared mountain huts with a bed and mattress each night, rather than camping in tents. For the first six days, the daily trekking distances are generally shorter than Lemosho, although summit day is slightly longer.

Our Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic approaches, taking in spectacular highlights such as the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall. Its longer itinerary also provides excellent acclimatisation, contributing to EverTrek's 95%+ summit success rate. However, Lemosho is a fully supported camping expedition, which many trekkers love as part of the mountain experience.

Ultimately, neither route is better than the other - they simply offer different experiences. If you'd prefer sleeping in mountain huts with a bed each night, Marangu could be the perfect choice. If you're looking for a longer expedition with some of Kilimanjaro's most varied scenery and enjoy the camping experience, Lemosho may be the route for you.

Our 7-day Marangu trek covers approximately 85km (53 miles), including two dedicated acclimatisation hikes and the descent from the summit to Marangu Gate.

Distances are approximate and may vary slightly depending on conditions and the routes chosen by your mountain guides.

Training before your Kilimanjaro trek is important to help build your fitness, stamina, and confidence on the mountain. We recommend preparing for at least 3 months, with 3–5 sessions per week, focusing on cardio, strength, and longer walks or hikes where possible. If you’d like extra support, our EverTrek training weekends in Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons are a great way to prepare alongside fellow trekkers. For more detailed advice, head to our Kit & Training tab.

You won't need much if any money on the mountain itself, as all meals, drinks, toilets, and tents are provided throughout the trek. However, you may want to bring some cash to celebrate at the bar at the end of your trek back to Moshi! We recommend carrying some Tanzanian Shillings for tips, drinks, or souvenirs after your climb.

We also recommend carrying some cash for a well deserved celebratory beer back at Marangu gate on day 9 of your itinerary before returning to Springlands hotel, as they don't accept card here.

The best trekking seasons are:

  • January to March – Clear skies, moderate temperatures, quieter trails
  • June to October – Dry season, excellent visibility, more popular

We recommend avoiding the main rainy seasons of April, May and November.

Tipping is customary and appreciated. We recommend budgeting around 10% of your total trip cost. For a Kilimanjaro trek priced between £2,845 and £3,045, a tip of £285–£305 is appropriate, which will be shared among your guides, assistant guides, cooks, and porters. Your lead guide will help organise a fair distribution of tips at the end of the trek.

Climbing to nearly 6,000m requires careful acclimatisation. To reduce your risk on this Kilimanjaro hike:

  • Follow the gradual ascent itinerary
  • Drink 3-4 litres of water per day
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Know the signs: headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue
  • Consider taking Diamox (speak with your GP before your trip)
  • Communicate early with your guide if symptoms appear, early intervention is key

The mountain huts are simple, shared and sociable, with dormitory-style rooms containing approximately 4–20 beds. You may share the sleeping space with trekkers from other groups, depending on how busy the mountain is.

A bed and mattress are provided, offering welcome shelter and a little more comfort than camping. You’ll still need to bring a warm sleeping bag, as the huts can become very cold at night.

Shorter Marangu itineraries are often completed in five or six days, giving trekkers less time to acclimatise before the summit attempt.

EverTrek’s unique 7-day itinerary includes two dedicated acclimatisation hikes from Horombo Huts. This gives your body valuable additional time to adapt to the altitude before summit night.

No itinerary can guarantee that someone will reach the summit or prevent altitude sickness, but taking more time to acclimatise will improve your chances of adapting successfully. Your guides will also monitor how you are feeling throughout the trek and make safety the priority at every stage.

Marangu is sometimes described as Kilimanjaro’s “easiest” route because it follows an established trail and offers mountain hut accommodation. However, it still reaches the same 5,895m summit and includes a particularly long and demanding summit day.

Marangu and Lemosho offer different experiences rather than one being simply easy and the other hard. Marangu provides beds and indoor shelter, while Lemosho is a longer, camping-based expedition with more varied terrain. Both require good preparation, determination and respect for the altitude.

To respect Tanzanian mountain regulations and porter welfare guidelines, your main duffel bag must not exceed 15kg. You'll also carry a daypack with essentials like water, snacks, spare layers, and sun protection. Packing light and smart is essential, you can pick up any last-minute items like snacks or toiletries in Moshi before you start the trek.

Yes, you require a visa to enter Tanzania for tourism purposes. You can either apply online in advance, or get it on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Find out more about applying for a Tanzania visa.
