Take the rest of the day to settle into your hotel and enjoy your first taste of Albanian cuisine at one of the local restaurants near your accommodation.
We leave city life behind and head north towards the wild landscapes of the Albanian Alps.
An early start rewards us with one of the most scenic journeys in the Balkans as we board the famous Koman Lake ferry. Towering cliffs rise from emerald waters while remote mountain villages cling to the hillsides around us.
After arriving in Fierza, we continue towards the beautiful Valbonë Valley, where the mountains begin to close in and the trekking adventure starts to feel very real. Spend the afternoon relaxing, settling in and preparing for the mountain days ahead.
Your trekking adventure through the Accursed Mountains of Northern Albania begins.
After a 4x4 transfer high into the mountains, we begin trekking through some of the most remote terrain in the region. Following rugged ridgelines and passing glacial lakes, we hike towards the Three Borders area, where Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro meet.
Expect huge panoramic views, wild alpine landscapes and an unforgettable day above 2,000m.

Tap Water Advice
In most places, the tap water in Albania is not drinkable, so it is better to buy bottled water in Albania, like the locals do as well.
We recommend carrying at least two litres of water a day to help combat the Summer heat, using refillable bottles or a hydration system, to ensure the plastic bottles can be disposed of properly.
Filter Water Wherever You Go
For extra peace of mind on your adventure, our branded Water-to-Go bottles filter up to 99.9999% of contaminants from non-saltwater sources while helping reduce single-use plastic.Use code evertrek20 to receive 20% discount at checkout.

Difficulty:
Challenging
How challenging is the trek?
The Accursed Mountains Trek is graded as challenging on the EverTrek challenge scale.
Trekking in the Albanian Alps is a highly rewarding mountain adventure through one of the most remote and dramatic regions of the Balkans. There’s no technical climbing involved, but this is still a proper mountain trek with long days, sustained ascents, big descents, rugged terrain and several demanding trekking days back-to-back.
This is an achievable challenge for fit, well-prepared walkers, but it shouldn’t be underestimated. The reward is huge mountain scenery, quieter trails, remote valleys and the unforgettable feeling of trekking through one of Europe’s last true wilderness landscapes.
If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path Albania trekking holiday with big views, big days and a real sense of achievement, this is a brilliant choice.
Pre-Trip Fitness Prep
To get the most from the Accursed Mountains Trek, you should be comfortable with:
- Hiking for 6–9 hours on mountain days
- Walking on rocky, uneven and sometimes steep terrain
- Managing sustained uphill and downhill sections
- Carrying a daypack of around 6–8kg
- Trekking on consecutive days with limited recovery time between bigger efforts
- Building stamina through hillwalking, long-distance walks, gym work, cycling or regular cardio training\
As a useful benchmark, your training hikes should include sustained uphill and downhill sections, ideally building towards days with around 800–1,000m of total elevation gain. If you can complete days like this at a steady pace without feeling completely exhausted, you’re on the right track.
If you’re not quite there yet, that doesn’t mean this trek is out of reach. With a few months of structured training and regular hill practice, this is an achievable challenge for healthy, determined walkers.
Is the Albania trek right for me?
This trek could be a great choice if you:
- Have previous hillwalking or multi-day trekking experience
- Are comfortable walking for 6–9 hours on mountain terrain
- Want a more remote and challenging trekking holiday in Europe
- Are happy with rugged trails, long climbs and big descents
- Like the idea of quieter routes beyond the classic Albania trekking trails
- Want a rewarding mountain adventure without technical climbing or extreme altitude
- It may not be the right choice yet if you:
- Are looking for a relaxed walking holiday or gentle sightseeing trip
- Have limited hiking experience and no time to train
- Struggle with steep, rocky or uneven terrain
- Are uncomfortable with long trekking days
- Prefer luxury accommodation throughout rather than mountain guesthouses during the trekking section
- Want an easy introduction to trekking rather than a challenging mountain route
With the right fitness, preparation and mindset, this Albania trek is a hugely rewarding adventure. It’s challenging, but that’s exactly what makes the views, valleys and mountain passes feel so worthwhile.
What to expect on the trip
Duration
The main trekking days typically last between 6 and 9 hours, depending on the route, weather, trail conditions and group pace.
The itinerary is designed to allow time for rest, refuelling and steady movement through the mountains, but these are still full days on foot. You should expect to be active for several hours at a time and comfortable spending most of the day outdoors.
Terrain
The terrain in the Accursed Mountains is rugged and varied. You can expect a mix of mountain paths, rocky trails, uneven ground, sustained climbs, long descents, ridge lines and remote valley sections.
Some sections may feel more exposed, especially on higher passes, ridges or in poor visibility. There is no technical climbing, but good balance, sturdy footwear and confidence on uneven mountain terrain are important.
Weather
Weather in Northern Albania and the Accursed Mountains can vary significantly depending on altitude, location and time of day.
Valley temperatures can feel warm and sunny, while conditions higher in the Albanian Alps can change quickly, particularly on exposed ridgelines and mountain passes. You should be prepared for sunshine, wind, cooler mountain air and the possibility of rain.
Good layers, waterproofs, sun protection and a reliable daypack are essential.
Altitude
The highest point on this trek is approximately 2,520m. This is not usually high enough to cause serious altitude issues for most trekkers, especially compared with high-altitude expeditions in places like Nepal or Kilimanjaro.
However, the altitude still adds to the challenge when combined with long distances, ascent, descent and rugged terrain. The biggest physical test is likely to be the sustained effort across several consecutive mountain days.
Accommodation
During the trip, you’ll stay in a mix of hotels and traditional mountain guesthouses.
The guesthouses are part of the experience, giving you the chance to stay closer to the trails and experience local hospitality in remote mountain communities. Facilities may be more basic than city hotels, but they add to the character and authenticity of the trek.
Pace
This is a challenging trek, but it is not a race.
The pace is designed to be steady and sustainable, allowing the group to move safely through the mountains while still enjoying the views, villages, lakes and high passes along the way. Smaller groups help create better pacing, closer support and a more personal trekking experience.
You should arrive prepared for long, rewarding days on foot, but also ready to enjoy the slower moments, including mountain views, shared meals, guesthouse hospitality and the feeling of being deep in the Albanian Alps.
