6-Day Norway Fjords Expedition: Hike, Kayak & Wild Camp Itinerary

Your adventure begins in Bergen before travelling north into one of Norway’s quieter fjord regions.

Your journey North takes roughly 4.5 hours, following scenic roads, mountain landscapes and ferry crossings, we journey towards Ålfoten, gradually leaving the busier routes behind. After arriving in this tiny fjord-side community, the expedition begins with a short hike into a remote valley where your first wilderness camp awaits.

Tonight, enjoy campfire cooking, meet your expedition team and settle into a spectacular wild camping location surrounded by mountains.

*** As there will only be one group transfer from Bergen airport, we advise booking flights that land by 1pm. If you arrive later than this, you may need to arrange your own transport to the start point. ***

Today we head deep into the rugged mountains surrounding Ålfoten.

Following quiet trails through lush valleys and onto rocky alpine terrain, we explore landscapes shaped by glaciers, mountains and ancient rock formations. Expect a long hiking day, remote trails and a real feeling of escape.

Today combines two of Norway’s greatest adventure experiences.

After hiking down towards the fjord, we swap hiking boots for kayaks and begin paddling across the dramatic Ålfotenfjord. Surrounded by steep mountains and quiet shorelines, we continue deeper into Norway’s fjord landscapes before climbing again towards our second remote campsite overlooking the Nordfjord. Please note, the final hour's hiking will be through the fjords where there are no roads, so you will be carrying some additional equipment and food for the two nights camping here. Please see our kit list for further information around how to pack for this.

This is a long but unforgettable expedition day, blending mountain hiking, sea kayaking and wild camping in one big adventure.

Hiking Distance: Approx. 11.5km total

Kayaking Distance: Approx. 9km

This is the expedition’s biggest mountain challenge.

Our goal is the dramatic landscape around Gjegnen and Blånibba, where glaciers, snowfields and panoramic fjord views dominate the scenery. Depending on conditions, the route may include a short guided glacier section using specialist safety equipment such as a harness, ropes and, if needed, crampons or microspikes. All required equipment is provided.

This is a true wilderness mountain day in one of Norway’s most impressive fjord regions.

Elevation Gain: Approx. 1,100m

Difficulty: Challenging

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tent, Wild Camping

After breaking camp, we descend towards the fjord for the final kayaking stage of the expedition.

The first hour of today's hike will be taking all of the communal camp equipment back down to the road, before continuing on to collect the kayaks.

Today we paddle the mighty Nordfjord, passing dramatic coastlines, quiet waters and isolated communities before reaching the small village of Davik. After days in the wild, a hot shower, proper bed and celebratory dinner will feel well earned.

Kayaking Distance: Approx. 17km

Paddling Time: Approx. 4 hrs

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Fjordside Cabin

This morning we leave the fjords behind.

After saying goodbye to your guide in Leirgulen, you’ll travel south by coastal boat, passing islands, remote villages and beautiful fjord scenery on one of Norway’s most scenic transport routes. On arrival back in Bergen, a taxi will be waiting to transfer you to the airport for your onward flight home.

Due to the travel time back to Bergen, we recommend booking your return flight from 3pm onwards.

Travel Time: Approx. 5 hrs including boat transfer

Challenging

How challenging is the trek?

This Norway hike, kayak and wild camp adventure is graded as challenging on the EverTrek challenge scale.

This is a proper expedition-style adventure through remote fjord and mountain terrain. You’ll be hiking for long days, sea kayaking on the fjords, wild camping in remote locations and spending several days away from the usual comforts of everyday life.

There’s no technical climbing involved, but the challenge comes from sustained ascents, long descents, rugged terrain, changeable weather, full days outdoors and combining hiking, kayaking and camp life across the trip.

Training Plan

Book now and you can get a FREE consultation & training plan from The Altitude Centre!

One day may include a short guided glacier crossing, where you’ll use specialist safety equipment such as a harness, ropes and, depending on snow conditions, crampons or microspikes. All required equipment is provided, and no previous glacier experience is needed. This is only a short part of the day, but it adds a real expedition feel to the adventure.

This is an achievable challenge for fit, well-prepared travellers, but it shouldn’t be underestimated. The reward is huge fjord scenery, peaceful paddling, remote wild camps and the rare feeling of properly switching off in one of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes.

Pre-Trip Fitness Prep

To get the most from this Norway adventure, you should be comfortable with:

  • Hiking for 5–8 hours on mountain days
  • Walking on rocky, uneven and sometimes steep terrain
  • Managing sustained uphill and downhill sections
  • Carrying a daypack of around 6–8kg
  • Kayaking for several hours at a steady pace, with no previous kayaking experience required
  • The ability to swim, and confident spending up to 5 hours on the water (with breaks along the way!)
  • Wild camping and spending multiple days outdoors in remote conditions
  • Building stamina through hillwalking, long walks, gym work, cycling, kayaking, rowing or regular cardio training

As a useful benchmark, your training hikes should include sustained uphill and downhill sections, ideally building towards days with around 800–1,000m of total elevation gain. If you can complete days like this at a steady pace without feeling completely exhausted, you’re on the right track.

For kayaking, no previous experience is required, but you should be comfortable being on the water and able to paddle steadily for a few hours at a time. Training with rowing, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding or upper body gym work can all be useful.

If you’re not quite there yet, that doesn’t mean this trip is out of reach. With a few months of structured training, regular hill practice and some upper body conditioning, this is an achievable challenge for healthy, determined adventurers.

Is the Norway Expedition right for me?

This trip could be a great choice if you:

  • Have previous hiking, hillwalking or multi-day outdoor experience
  • Are comfortable being active for several days in a row
  • Want a remote Norway adventure holiday with hiking, sea kayaking and wild camping
  • Like the idea of a hands-on, expedition-style trip
  • Are happy to try sea kayaking and wild camping with guide support, even if you haven’t done them before
  • Are comfortable with simple camp life, shared meals and time away from everyday comforts
  • Want to properly switch off and reconnect with nature

With the right fitness, preparation and mindset, this is a hugely rewarding Norway adventure. It’s challenging, but that’s what makes the fjords, wild camps, mountain views and off-grid feeling so memorable.

What to expect on the trip

Duration

The hiking days typically last around 5–8 hours, depending on the route, weather, trail conditions and group pace.

The kayaking sections typically last around 2–5 hours, depending on distance, water conditions and group ability. You should expect full days outdoors, with a mix of hiking, paddling, setting up camp, cooking and moving through remote landscapes.

Terrain

The terrain is classic Norwegian mountain ground, with a mix of lower paths, rocky trails, rough ground, steep ascents, long descents and alpine sections higher up.

Some areas may feel exposed, especially in poor visibility or changing weather. There is no technical climbing, but sturdy footwear, good balance and confidence on uneven mountain terrain are important.

Kayaking

The kayaking takes place on fjord waters and is a key part of the adventure.

No previous kayaking experience is required, but you must be able to swim, and you should be comfortable being on the water and able to paddle steadily for a few hours at a time. Your guides will provide instruction and support, and conditions will be assessed locally to keep the activity safe and suitable for the group.

Glacier Section

One day may include a short guided glacier crossing, depending on snow and route conditions.

This section may require a harness, ropes and possibly crampons or microspikes. All required safety equipment is provided. You do not need previous glacier experience, but you should be comfortable following guide instructions and moving carefully over mountain terrain.

This is only a short part of the day, not a full technical glacier expedition.

Weather

Weather in the Norwegian fjords can vary significantly depending on altitude, location and time of day.

Valleys and fjord areas can feel mild and calm, while higher mountain sections can be cooler, windier and more exposed. Conditions can change quickly, so you should be prepared for sunshine, rain, wind and cooler temperatures, even during the summer months.

Good layers, waterproofs, warm clothing, sun protection and a reliable daypack are essential.

Altitude

The maximum altitude reached on this trip is approximately 1,700m.

This is not usually high enough to cause serious altitude issues for most trekkers. The bigger challenge comes from the amount of ascent, descent, distance, rugged terrain and the combination of hiking, kayaking and wild camping over several consecutive days.

Wild Camping

Wild camping is a big part of the experience.

You’ll stay in remote outdoor locations, help with camp life and enjoy simple evenings surrounded by fjords, lakes, rivers and mountain scenery. Expect basic conditions, shared responsibilities and a proper sense of escape from the usual comforts of everyday life.

Pace

This is a challenging trip, but it is not a race.

The pace is designed to be steady and sustainable, allowing the group to move safely through the mountains and fjords while still enjoying the wild camps, views, kayaking and slower moments along the way.

You should arrive ready for full, active days, but also ready to enjoy the simplicity of camp life, shared meals and the feeling of being properly off-grid in Norway’s fjord wilderness.

FAQs

This Norway adventure is graded as challenging. It involves consecutive days of hiking, sea kayaking, wild camping and full days outdoors in remote fjord and mountain terrain.

Previous hiking or hillwalking experience is recommended, along with a good level of fitness. You do not need technical climbing experience, but you should be comfortable with long active days, uneven mountain terrain, sustained ascents and basic wild camping conditions.

No previous kayaking experience is required.

You’ll be given instruction and all necessary kayaking equipment will be provided. However, you should be comfortable being on the water and able to paddle steadily for a few hours at a time.

No. Kayak transport and logistics are arranged by the local team in Norway.

You’ll need to carry your own personal kit during expedition days, but you won’t be expected to carry kayaks between locations.

Your trip will start and end in Bergen, with a group transfer from the airport into the fjords, ready to begin your adventure.

Due to the transfer time from the airport, we advise booking a flight that arrives at Bergen Airport by 1pm at the latest.

Please note, this may mean you need to connect in Oslo, depending where you are flying from, as there may not be a direct flight that arrives in time.

If you decide to arrive the day before the itinerary starts and stay in Bergen centre, we will let you know what time to be at the airport to meet the group transfer.

One day may include a short guided glacier section, depending on snow and route conditions.

This may require specialist safety equipment such as a harness, ropes and, if needed, crampons or microspikes. All required equipment is provided and no previous glacier experience is needed. Your guides will assess conditions locally and adjust the route where required.

This is only a short section of one day, not a full technical glacier expedition.

The wild campsites are remote outdoor locations beside rivers, lakes, fjords or mountain valleys.

Facilities are very limited, which is part of the expedition-style experience. You should expect simple camping conditions, shared camp responsibilities, outdoor cooking and a proper sense of being away from everyday comforts.

Due to the remote nature of this trip, there won't be any toilets where you will be wildcamping, we will be using 'wild' toilets.

Your guide will have sanitary bags, and will explain how/where to use, to ensure that we practice 'Leave No Trace' principles.

There are no showers while wild camping.

You’ll be camping close to rivers, lakes or fjord waters, so there may be opportunities for a cold-water refresh where safe and suitable. On the final night, you’ll stay in cabin accommodation, where you can enjoy a hot shower before travelling back to Bergen the next day.

Excess luggage transfers are provided, so you won’t need to carry everything for the whole trip.

However, you should expect to carry your personal kit during expedition days, including daily essentials, layers, waterproofs, water, snacks and any items needed while hiking or kayaking. A suitable daypack is essential.

The trip starts and finishes in Bergen, Norway.

On Day 1, the group transfer will depart from Bergen Airport in the early afternoon, with the exact time confirmed closer to departure. You should book a flight that arrives in plenty of time for the transfer north into the fjords.

On Day 6, you’ll travel back towards Bergen by coastal boat and taxi transfer.

Due to the travel time back to Bergen on the final day, we recommend booking your return flight from 3pm onwards.

The journey back includes a coastal boat transfer and onward taxi to the airport, so earlier flights are not recommended.

Ålfoten offers a quieter, more remote and more adventurous side of Norway.

Instead of following the busiest tourist routes, this itinerary takes you into a lesser-visited fjord region with wild camps, mountain trails, sea kayaking and a stronger expedition feel. It’s ideal if you want a Norway adventure that feels more off-grid and immersive.

You’ll need suitable outdoor clothing for hiking, kayaking and wild camping in changeable mountain and fjord conditions.

Key items include sturdy walking boots, waterproofs, warm layers, gloves, a hat, sun protection, swimwear or quick-drying clothing, a reliable daypack and personal camping essentials. A full kit list can be found on the Kit & Training tab.

Yes. Travel insurance is required for this trip.

Your policy should cover hiking, sea kayaking, wild camping, emergency medical treatment, repatriation and trip cancellation. You should check your policy carefully to make sure it covers the activities included in this Norway adventure.

Tipping isn't customary in Norway, however if you feel the guide did a good job, any tips would be greatly appreciated. Our recommendation is NOK 200-400 (roughly £15-£30).
