What Vaccinations Do You Need for Nepal? A Trekker's Guide

Before you think about whether your legs are ready for the Himalayas, there’s another bit of preparation worth ticking off: your travel vaccinations.

Whether you're heading to Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley or one of our other Nepal adventures, it's important to check your vaccinations and travel-health requirements before you go.

For most travellers, the main recommended vaccinations are relatively straightforward, but exactly what you need depends on your health, previous vaccinations, where you're travelling from and what you'll be doing in Nepal.

Always speak to your GP, pharmacist or a qualified travel-health professional for personalised advice before travelling.

Do I Need Vaccinations To Travel To Nepal?

There are no routine vaccination requirements for travellers arriving in Nepal directly from the UK, but some vaccinations are recommended for most travellers.

It's currently recommended that travellers to Nepal are up to date with their routine UK vaccinations and considers Hepatitis A, tetanus and typhoid relevant for most travellers.

Your travel-health professional can check your vaccination history and advise whether you need any boosters or additional vaccinations.

It's also worth checking the advice again before you travel, as travel-health recommendations can change.

Which Vaccinations Are Recommended For Nepal?

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for previously unvaccinated travellers to Nepal.

Hepatitis A can be spread through contaminated food and water, which is why good food and water hygiene is important during your trip too.

For trekkers, this is particularly relevant when travelling through different towns, villages and mountain communities where food and water sources can vary.

Tetanus

You should be up to date with your routine UK tetanus vaccinations before travelling.

TravelHealthPro advises that a tetanus-containing booster may be recommended if your last dose was more than 10 years ago when travelling to countries or areas where access to medical facilities may be limited.

That makes checking your tetanus protection a sensible part of preparing for your trek.

Typhoid

Typhoid vaccination is recommended for most travellers to Nepal, alongside taking sensible precautions with food and water.

That doesn't mean you can eat absolutely anything just because you've had the jab, unfortunately. Your stomach still gets a vote.

Wash your hands regularly, use safe drinking water and take care with food hygiene throughout your trip.

Do I Need A Yellow Fever Vaccination For Nepal?

Yellow Fever is not present in Nepal, and a Yellow Fever vaccination is not routinely recommended simply because you're travelling there.

However, Nepal does have Yellow Fever certificate requirements for certain travellers.

You may need to show a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country where Yellow Fever transmission occurs, or if you have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in a country where there is a Yellow Fever transmission risk.

For most travellers flying from the UK directly or via common transit hubs, this is unlikely to be relevant. However, always check the latest entry requirements for your specific route before travelling.

Are There Other Vaccinations I Might Need?

Possibly. This is where your individual itinerary comes into play.

Additional vaccinations may be considered for certain travellers, including Hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies and others depending on factors such as your activities, length of stay, location and individual health circumstances.

Your GP, pharmacist or travel clinic can assess your individual circumstances and tell you whether any additional vaccinations are appropriate.

When Should I Arrange My Nepal Vaccinations?

Don't leave it until the week before you fly.

Some vaccinations require multiple doses, while others need to be given a certain amount of time before travel. Your previous vaccination history will also affect what you need.

We recommend speaking to your GP, pharmacist or specialist travel clinic well before your departure so there is plenty of time to complete any recommended vaccination courses.

It's also worth checking the latest Nepal travel-health guidance shortly before departure, as recommendations and entry requirements can change.
