If you're looking for a thrilling adventure, the Mount Toubkal Hike in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco is a must-try. Standing tall at 4167m, Jebel Toubkal is not just another mountain; it's a formidable but achievable challenge that promises breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences.

Climbing Mount Toubkal: A Personal Experience

My first journey to Mount Toubkal was a mix of excitement and uncertainty. As a first-time trekker, I underestimated the challenge that lay ahead. But with determination and a bit of grit, I conquered this majestic peak in April 2022 and basked in the awe-inspiring panorama of the Sahara desert from its summit. I loved it so much…I went again. This time in December winter conditions, which brought a whole other challenge.

Understanding the Challenge

The Trekking Options

You can approach the Mount Toubkal hike in two ways: the weekend trek or the 8-day trek. Each offers a unique experience tailored to different preferences and schedules.

  • Weekend Trek: The weekend trek begins in Imlil, walking to the stone refuge serving as your base camp, to then start your early morning summit. While not technically challenging, the first half of the trip involves navigating gradual inclines, steps, and dusty trails. The scorching heat poses a formidable obstacle, especially during certain times of the year.

  • 8-Day trek: The 8-day trek offers a deeper immersion into the Berber culture and the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. With opportunities to summit both Mount Toubkal and the second-highest peak, Mount Ouanoukrim, adventurers can relish in the unparalleled beauty of North Africa. You'll have much more time on this trip to relax and rest your weary feet.

Preparing to climb Mount Toubkal

To tackle either trek successfully, hydration is key. Carry a water bladder in your daypack and don't forget sunscreen, including lip balm, to shield yourself from the relentless sun.

During winter treks, snowy conditions and cold temperatures add an extra layer of challenge. Renting winter equipment in the country, including ice axes and crampons, ensures your safety and comfort during the ascent.

Summit Day: The Ultimate Challenge

Summit day is where the real test begins. A steep, continuous climb awaits, with winter conditions possibly necessitating the use of crampons, ice axes, and helmets. Don't fret if you're unfamiliar with these tools; your guide will provide guidance and ample time for practice before the ascent.

  • Winter Summit: In winter, Mount Toubkal transforms into a rugged, awe-inspiring landscape. Stay positive, heed your guide's instructions, and remain vigilant in the icy terrain.

Recommended Times to Climb Toubkal

For optimal conditions and safety, consider tackling Mount Toubkal during the spring and autumn months. April to May and September to October are popular times of year to climb Toubkal, the weather is much more predictable, it’s not too hot and not too cold. You’re more likely during these months to get clearer views too.

Around April and May, the winter snow usually starts to melts away, making the trails way easier to tackle. When I summited in April, the snowline started a little before reaching the refuge base camp and we only needed to wear crampons on the summit night. There was snow all the way up the summit, but it wasn't icy and the weather was clear and bright as we ascended to the top. Come September and October, it's all dry and well-travelled, so you won't find yourself slipping and sliding, allowing you to soak in the scenery hassle-free. However, keep your eyes peeled for any signs of Toubkal altitude sickness, especially as you approach the summit, no matter the season.

Winter climbs in October to the end of April offer a unique and challenging experience but require additional preparation and caution. When I went in December the snow started a little further up than I first expected, but there was a lot of dangerous ice hidden below, and on the summit push, the wind chill was insane. So be sure to come with lots and lots of layers if attempting in winter. The hardest bit about this time of year was taking crampons on and off throughout the summit day. Freezing cold hands is no joke.

So have a think about what kind of experience you want!

  • Recommended Winter Gear: If attempting a winter ascent, equip yourself with crampons and familiarize yourself with their usage. This proactive approach will ensure a smoother and safer journey. Need some pointers on winter gear? Read our article here all about winter Toubkal gear
