During this 15 day trek, you’ll pass through traditional Sherpa villages, cross suspension bridges and experience the culture and atmosphere of the Everest region. The journey takes in some of the area’s best-known highlights, including Namche Bazaar, the Everest View Hotel and Tengboche Monastery, with spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam along the way.
The route is carefully paced to give you time to adjust to the increasing altitude, with acclimatisation days in both Namche and Dingboche. You’ll then continue higher into the Khumbu, passing through Lobuche and Gorak Shep before reaching Everest Base Camp. For those feeling strong, there’s also an optional sunrise hike to Kala Patthar at 5,550m for one of the most memorable views of Everest.

Everest Base Camp Via Gokyo Valley: For EBC With Even More Variety

The 18-day Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Valley trek leaves the classic trail after Namche Bazaar and heads into the quieter Gokyo Valley. You’ll pass through peaceful Sherpa villages, reach the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, climb Gokyo Ri and cross the challenging Cho La Pass before joining the classic route to Everest Base Camp. You’ll still experience the major Everest moments - including Base Camp, the Khumbu Glacier and an optional sunrise hike to Kala Patthar - but the journey is longer, quieter and more varied.
Everest Base Camp Via Gokyo Valley: For EBC With Even More Variety
How Does Gokyo Compare With Classic Everest Base Camp?
Classic EBC follows the most direct and iconic trail towards Base Camp. Gokyo adds three days, a major high-altitude pass and a greater variety of landscapes.
Cho La makes the Gokyo route more demanding than the classic trek, with rocky and potentially icy terrain at 5,420m. It’s still a trekking adventure rather than a technical climb, but you should be prepared for a bigger physical challenge.
Is The Gokyo Valley Route Right For You?
It’s best suited to trekkers who:
- Want a quieter and more varied alternative to the classic trail.
- Are particularly drawn to the Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri.
- Are prepared for the additional challenge of crossing Cho La.
- Have time for a longer 18-day adventure.
Everest Three Passes: For The Ultimate Trekking Challenge
If you’re looking to trek to Everest Base Camp but you're thinking, “I want to see as much of this as possible", the Three Passes trek is a huge contender.
Although you will still reach Everest Base Camp, this 19-day trek takes you on a huge circuit through some of the most dramatic and remote parts of the Khumbu. Rather than simply following the classic EBC trail, you’ll venture deeper into the region and take on three major high-altitude passes along the way.
It’s a big Himalayan adventure where the journey itself is every bit as important as reaching Base Camp.
What Are The Three Passes?
The name comes from the three high-altitude passes that form the heart of the route: Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m) and Renjo La (5,360m).
The route leaves the main EBC trail at Chhukung before crossing Kongma La and heading towards Everest Base Camp. From there, it continues through Dzongla and across Cho La into the Gokyo Valley, before crossing Renjo La and eventually returning towards Namche Bazaar.
Along the way, you’ll experience some of the most varied terrain in the Everest region, from glaciers and high mountain passes to the quieter Gokyo Valley.
The terrain can be demanding, with steep ascents and descents, glaciers and icy or slippery sections. But with the right preparation, training and support from our experienced team, it’s a challenge you can take on with confidence.
So, is it worth it? We’ll let the mountain have the final say.
Who Is The Three Passes Trek For?
It's best suited to people who:
- Are looking to complete a scenic, high-altitude trekking challenge
- Want to explore more of the Everest region than just Base Camp
- Want to experience Himalayan terrain and high mountain passes
- Want to take on Everest Base Camp, the Gokyo Valley and Khumbu all in one adventure
- Are well prepared for a demanding high-altitude trek
- Want the sense of achievement of completing one of the most challenging treks that the region has to offer
This trek is about more than reaching Everest Base Camp. It’s the feeling of spending almost three weeks immersed in the Himalayas, moving through changing landscapes and taking on a new challenge around every corner. A true trekker's paradise.
Ultimate Island Peak: For Those Who Want To Go Beyond Base Camp
What if reaching Everest Base Camp was only a part of something much bigger?
The Ultimate Island Peak and Everest Base Camp adventure takes you deep into the Everest region, before continuing beyond Base Camp towards the summit of Island Peak (6,189m).
Over 22 days, you'll be combining a classic trekking experience with the skills and excitement of a Himalayan climbing expedition. You’ll experience the Gokyo Valley, cross Cho La, visit Everest Base Camp and hike to Kala Patthar before heading towards Island Peak. From there, the focus shifts from trekking to mountaineering, with the summit becoming the ultimate goal.
What Happens After Everest Base Camp?
After reaching Everest Base Camp, you’ll continue through the Khumbu towards Kala Patthar and Lobuche before crossing Kongma La at 5,535m, the highest of the three passes.
From there, you’ll head towards Chhukung and then Island Peak Base Camp at 5,200m, where you’ll spend the night in a tented camp.
This is where the adventure starts to feel different. You’ll receive training for the summit, including how to use equipment such as crampons and an ice axe, before making your summit attempt the following morning.
The summit day takes you through rock steps, crevasses, seracs and steep 40-45-degree slopes before reaching the summit at 6,189m. From the top, you’ll have incredible views across Everest and the surrounding Himalayas before descending back to Base Camp and Chhukung.
And most importantly yes, climbing a 6,000m Himalayan peak gives you complete bragging rights!
Does Island Peak Involve Technical Climbing?
Yes. This is where Ultimate Island Peak moves beyond high-altitude trekking and into mountaineering.
The itinerary includes summit training before the climb, and the summit route involves crampons, an ice axe, crevasses, seracs, rock steps and 40-45 degree slopes. You’ll be supported by a climbing leader who will teach you the techniques needed for the summit attempt.
That means preparation matters. This isn’t just about being able to walk for several hours a day - you’ll need to train specifically for the physical demands of the expedition and be comfortable taking on a more technical mountain environment.
With the right preparation and support, completing this expedition is absolutely possible. And if you’re wondering whether you’re up for it, there’s only one way to find out - start training!
Ultimate Island Peak: Who’s Up For The Challenge?
This could be the experience you should take on if you:
- Are ready to take on Everest Base Camp and the Island Peak summit
- Want to progress from trekking to mountaineering
- Are after a bigger physical and mental challenge than trekking alone
- Like the idea of going beyond Base Camp and chasing a summit
- Are prepared to train specifically for the demands of Island Peak
You don’t need years of mountaineering experience, but you do need a strong fitness base, experience of demanding mountain days and the commitment to train properly. If you’re unsure whether you’re ready, speak to our Adventure Experts before choosing this expedition.
How Do the Everest Adventures Compare In Difficulty?
Classic EBC, EBC via Gokyo and Three Passes are all rated Challenging, while Ultimate Island Peak is Hardcore. So really, it comes down to what kind of challenge you fancy - trekking further, exploring more, or adding a 6,189m summit to the mix. No pressure!
