which route should you choose for the machu picchu hike?
So, you've set your sights on Machu Picchu, the mysterious ancient citadel high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. But now comes the big question: which hiking route should you choose? With so many options available, it can be a daunting decision.
In this blog, we'll compare two awesome routes that we provide, and that we think…are the BEST: the classic Inca Trail and the lesser-known Tomacaya route. Let's dive in!
The Way of the Incas: The Inca Trail hike
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu hike is perhaps the most famous route, and for good reason. This ancient trail, once used by the Incas, offers stunning views of the Andes, fascinating archaeological sites, and a sense of adventure that's pretty hard to beat.
Things to consider:
- The highest point of the Inca Trail is Warmiwañusca (aka 'Dead Woman’s Pass'.) which stands at an altitude of 4,198m (13,769 ft). Not a small height, so be prepared for some altitude!
- Permit Restrictions: Due to its popularity, the Inca Trail has limited permits available each day, so it's essential to book with us well in advance and to send us your passport details right away.
- Crowds: During peak season, the trail can get quite crowded, especially at key viewpoints and campsites.
- Physical Demands: The trek involves steep ascents and descents, challenging terrain, and high altitudes, requiring a good level of fitness. There’s a fair few steps…apparently around 70,866!
The Hidden Valley: Tomacaya Route
The Tomacaya route is a relatively new and less-traveled alternative to the Inca Trail. Offering a more remote and off-the-beaten-path experience, this route appeals to adventurers seeking solitude and tranquility. Plus, we are currently the only UK company that uses this awesome route! So you'll definetely get a unique experience!
Things to consider:
- Altitude Challenges: The Tomacaya route includes high-altitude passes, so acclimatization and proper preparation is crucial. The highest point of the Tomacaya Route is the impressive Tocto pass, at 4900m. Machu Picchu itself stands at 7,972 feet (2,430m) above sea level.
- It's also one of the longer routes above 4000m. So get your steps in when training!
What’s the difference between the Inca Trail and the Tomacaya Route?
- Unbelievably beautiful with the best views in the region to feast your eyes upon including views of Mt Salkantay (6270m)
- 700 meters higher than any other route to Machu Picchu (totalling 4900m)
- Remote region coming across far less people than any other area
- A tougher challenge than the classic routes, perfect for our hardcore EverTrekkers
- No other companii offers this route meaning you get an exclusive experience that still brings the challenge!
- Steeped in history, soaking up the feeling of walking the same footsteps as the Inca did over 500 years ago
- A full historic immersion; you'll wind your way through historic sites with no shortage of Inca ruins to explore
- Meeting other trekkers & villagers is guaranteed and you'll be buzzing from the social energy on this ancient route
- We include an extra day acclimatization compared to most itineraries
- Although still a great challenge, it's a slightly easier trail compared to our Tomacaya route making this the perfect choice for your first high altitude trek.
This journey is a monumental check off your bucket list and a timeless trekking experience no matter which route you take.
Which Hiking Route to Machu Picchu is Right for You?
Choosing between the Inca Trail and the Tomacaya route ultimately depends on your preferences, fitness level, and desired experience. If you crave a classic trek with historical significance and don't mind sharing the trail with other hikers, the Inca Trail may be the perfect fit. On the other hand, if you seek solitude, breathtaking scenery, and a sense of exploration, the Tomacaya route offers a hidden wonder waiting to be discovered.
Whichever route you choose, heading out on a trek to Machu Picchu is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that promises awesome memories and awe-inspiring moments. So pack your sense of adventure, and prepare to experience the wonders of Peru like never before!
