Training 101: Conquer Those Steep Ups and Downs

The TMB isn't your average saunter in the park – it's a rollercoaster of steep ascents and descents. It's 9 days in total with 8 days of trekking so, let's talk training, because even if you're ageless in spirit, your body needs to be ready for this one!

1. Day Treks are Your New Best Friend

Our biggest bit of advice is just get going on some day hikes to get those legs working and your heart pumping. Heading out into the hills for 4-5 hours makes all the difference! And if you can't get out, hop onto the stairmaster in a gym or simply walk up and down some stairs!

2. Pack It Like You Mean It

Ever heard the saying "train as you fight"? Well, in our case, it's "train as you trek." Load up your trusty daypack with all the essentials you plan to carry on the trail, or fill it with some weights/water that you can drink along the way. Need reccomendations for daypacks? Check out this handy article!

"I can't go hiking! I'm a parent with a baby/toddler!"...well one of the best things I've ever bought is a baby carrier, put the little one in the carrier on your back with a good waterproof cover, planty of layers and get going! It's fun for them and awesome training for you.

3. Boots!

On the TMB, you'll probably face all sorts of weather, from hot sun to crazy rain or even snow up in the higher areas. You'll stroll on nice paths, hit some rocky bits now and then, and might need to hop over a stream or two. It's extermely important to wear in your boots well before your trek, so be sure to head out in them whenever you have the chance. As for the type of boot, you'll be good with some good quality all round trekking boots like Meindl Bhutan MFS GTX. These have a memory foam ankle support and hardy & grippy Vibram soles that will last you a very long time. Can't go wrong with these in our opinion!

4. Fuel your Body!

FOOD and WATER! It's so important to keep your body healthy before and during your adventure. For long treks like the TMB your body needs all those important nutrients, carbs, proteins and vitamins to stay at tip top shape. Sometimes you may not have much of an appetite whilst trekking but try and stay fueled and keep those enrgy levels up with fruit, nuts, energy gels/chews and bars. We highly recommend checking out CLIF Bar for your trek!

Be in the Know: EverTrek's Pro Tips

Our seasoned trekkers have some nuggets of wisdom to share:

  • Hydration is Key: Keep that water bottle handy during your training sessions. Hydration is your best friend at altitude. KEEP DRINKING (water obviously, save the beers till after the trek)

  • Test Your Gear: To re-iterate, break in those boots! Wear your weighted backpack or toddler, and make sure your gear is as ready for the adventure as you are.
