When is the best time of year to visit Everest Base Camp?

We often get asked: when is the best time of year to trek to Everest Base Camp? We’re so glad you’re looking to go trekking in the Himalaya!

We Evertrek Yetis hold this part of the world very dear to our hearts, especially Nepal. We want each and every trekker who comes along with us to have the best possible time on their trekking adventure, so, with that in mind, let’s talk about dates and the best time to go to Everest Base Camp.

The date you pick for your EBC trek will depend on a few factors. Are you good with crowds, or are you looking for a quieter trekking experience? Are you dependent on school breaks? Are you interested in meeting future Everest summiters? Are you into festivals? There’s a lot to consider, so we’ll make it a bit easier for you… When thinking about the best time to go to Everest Base Camp, one of the first things to think about is the weather.

Quick answer: the best months for Everest Base Camp

The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp is usually April, May, October, and November. These months give you the best balance of clearer skies, more stable trekking conditions, and manageable temperatures.

For the clearest mountain views, October and November are often the strongest choices. For warmer conditions and spring colour, April and May are excellent.

That said, there isn’t one “perfect” month for everyone. The best time depends on what matters most to you:

If you want the clearest mountain views: October and November are usually the best months.

If you want warmer trekking conditions: April and May are strong choices.

If you want spring scenery and rhododendrons: April is a lovely time to travel.

If you want quieter trails: late November or early March can work well.

If you want a festival or cultural bonus: March may coincide with Holi, while October or November may coincide with Mani Rimdu.

If you want to avoid the busiest periods: try to avoid peak Easter dates and the busiest October departures where possible.

For most first-time trekkers, we’d recommend travelling in spring or autumn rather than winter or monsoon season.

Everest Base Camp weather and what to expect year-round

Temperatures in the Everest Region can range from -20°C (-4°F) in the winter months, to as high as around 20°C (68°F) in the autumn and spring. With so much variability, it’s important to have weather in mind when choosing the best time to climb to Everest Base Camp.

If you are looking to trek during the warmer months, we suggest picking a date in the spring or early autumn season. During these times, the precipitation is limited, and day temperatures will be mild to warm.

If you’re trekking in spring and autumn you will probably see quite a few t-shirts out on the trails!

For a colder mountain experience, late autumn and winter are your best bet. If you’re looking to add that extra bit of challenge to the EBC experience, trekking in the colder months will definitely do it! Day temperatures are still pretty comfortable, with sunny skies on most days, but you will 100% notice the cold at night.

Winter temperatures in the Everest region can go well below freezing, and it’s not uncommon to notice temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) near Everest Base Camp.

Temperatures on Everest Base Camp and the summit

Temperatures warm rapidly in the spring months of April and May,although nights are still cold and chilly.

During the short climbing window in May, summit temperatures average around -26°C (-15°F).

When is the best time of year to meet Everest summiters?

Spring is one of the best times to climb Mount Everest or to Base Camp, and is also a great time to meet fellow trekkers who are making summit attempts. spring has some of the best weather for summit success.

More specifically, May is a great month to meet some future summiters.Lower wind speeds and warmer temperatures are what’s needed to make an Everest expedition possible, and there is only a relatively short climbing window in which these conditions are present each year, also known as “the window of calm”

These conditions can typically be achieved in the month of May, which means that May is the most popular time to trek for those attempting to summit.

When is Everest Base Camp busy, and when is it quiet?

The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most popular treks in the world, so it’s a safe bet to say that there will be plenty of people around whether you trek during winter, autumn, or spring.

However, what is the best time to hike Everest Base Camp? Well, there are times during the year where the trek is most popular, and this information should help you to determine the best time to go.

As mentioned above, spring (and May in particular) is the most popular time for those looking to summit Everest, so there will be plenty of excitement in the air during this time. If you are looking to meet as many people as possible, hear some great stories, and make connections with those who will shortly find their way to the top, this is the time for you!

If you are looking to do the trip when there are fewer people about, then consider trekking to Everest Base Camp in the late autumn and winter months. As mentioned above, these times are much colder and so the trek takes an extra bit of determination to complete.

You will definitely still meet some great fellow trekkers along the way, but it will be a bit quieter than the busy spring and autumn months.

Can you experience festivals on an Everest Base Camp trek?

Yes - depending on when you travel, your trek may overlap with some of Nepal’s most memorable festivals.

The most region-specific festival is Mani Rimdu, a Buddhist festival held at Tengboche Monastery, usually in October or November. For trekkers, it can be an incredible chance to see masked dances, ceremonies, music, and Sherpa Buddhist traditions in one of the most spectacular mountain settings in the world.

If you travel in March, your trip may also coincide with Holi, Nepal’s colourful festival of spring. This is usually more noticeable in Kathmandu before or after your trek, rather than high on the Everest Base Camp trail, but it can add a brilliant cultural moment to a spring departure.

Autumn can also overlap with wider Nepalese festivals such as Dashain and Tihar, although exact dates change each year because they follow the lunar calendar.

So yes - festivals can be a brilliant added bonus. But we wouldn’t recommend choosing your Everest Base Camp dates based on festivals alone. Weather, trail conditions, visibility, availability, and your own schedule still matter more.
